Shirgao's Shree Devi Lairai Jatra Resumes with Unprecedented Security Measures
In the wake of last year's tragic stampede, the revered Shree Devi Lairai jatra at Shirgao is set to commence on Tuesday under a comprehensive security blanket. Lakhs of devotees, including thousands of dedicated 'dhonds'—special devotees of the goddess—are expected to participate in this five-day religious festival, which marks a significant cultural event in Goa.
Enhanced Surveillance and Police Deployment
To ensure a smooth and safe celebration, authorities have deployed 94 CCTV and PTZ (pan-tilt-zoom) cameras across six strategic zones, providing real-time monitoring of the entire area. A total of 967 police personnel, 460 traffic police officers, 65 fire service personnel, three medical teams, and approximately 150 volunteers will be on duty round the clock from Tuesday morning until Wednesday morning. This robust security apparatus aims to prevent any untoward incidents and manage the massive crowds effectively.
Logistical Arrangements and Crowd Control
The Goa police's traffic cell has made extensive parking arrangements for 4,000 vehicles on the Assonora side, behind the temple, and in nearby mining lease areas. Inside the temple, separate arrangements have been made for the general public and the 'dhonds' to facilitate orderly worship. A control room has been established as a central coordination hub, enabling seamless communication and prompt responses to emergencies.
Innovative Safety Systems and Infrastructure
For the first time in Goa, the directorate of fire and emergency services has installed a rapid development control command system to swiftly address any fire-related incidents. Additionally, a robust public address system has been set up at 14 key locations across Shirgao to broadcast safety instructions, manage crowds, and communicate during emergencies. To ensure unobstructed movement for devotees, encroachments along the route, including unauthorized retaining walls, have been removed, and all shops will be closed on the jatra day, with only 34 authorized stalls permitted behind the temple and near the 'homkund'.
Ritual Proceedings and Devotee Participation
The goddess Shree Devi Lairai will emerge from the temple at midnight on Tuesday, embarking on a four-day journey to bless homes in Shirgao before returning on Saturday. From the second day onwards, a large influx of devotees is anticipated for the 'kaulotsav' celebrations. Authorities estimate that 40,000 'dhonds' will attend the first day alone, highlighting the festival's immense popularity.
Preparatory Measures and Official Appeals
In preparation for the event, the administration conducted a full-fledged mock drill from 9 pm on Saturday to 3 am on Sunday, addressing any logistical hiccups to ensure everything is in place. North Goa collector Ankit Yadav has urged all devotees and 'dhonds' to adhere to the instructions and systems implemented at Shirgao, emphasizing the importance of cooperation for a peaceful and successful jatra.
