Shivakumar: Literature, Music Vital for Dharma and Culture

Deputy CM DK Shivakumar Stresses Role of Literature and Art in Upholding Dharma

Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar declared that literature and art are fundamental components of dharma and crucial for safeguarding cultural heritage. He made these remarks during the inauguration of a music school, hall, and dining hall built to commemorate the 105th birth anniversary of V Kanchana Venkasubrahmanyam, the founder-guru of the Kanchana Lakshminarayana Music Academy Trust, in Bajattur, Puttur, on Friday.

Culture as National Wealth and the Need for Nurturing Talent

"Culture is the true wealth of a nation and must be strengthened," Shivakumar asserted. "By consistently providing opportunities, we allow natural talent to flourish. To uphold dharma, we must continuously dedicate ourselves to supporting both literature and music." He highlighted that the coastal region, already a center for education, literature, and traditions like Bhootharadhane, Kambala, and Yakshagana, along with a robust banking sector, should be further encouraged to achieve greater growth.

Music as a Unifying Force and Cultural Identity

Shivakumar elaborated on the profound nature of music, drawing an analogy: "Music is something vast and profound. When many streams come together, they form a river; when rivers join, they become the sea. Similarly, when many cultures converge, it gives identity to the coastal region." He praised the music academy for its growth and production of numerous music experts, attributing this success to immense hard work. He noted that students from the institution have gained recognition in various places.

Principles of Selfless Service and Faith

The Deputy Chief Minister also touched on broader philosophical themes. He stated that the natural world exemplifies selfless service, and the human body is meant not just for individual benefit but to serve society. "Central to this existence is faith. Remember your origins, for to forget the roots is to forfeit the fruits," he added, emphasizing the importance of staying connected to one's heritage.

Pontiff's Insights on Music and Art for Inner Peace

Ramachandrapura Mutt pontiff Sri Raghaveshwara Bharati Swami, who blessed the occasion, spoke about the transformative power of music. "Peace is not an external search; it resides within our own body and mind. Through song, sorrow and difficulties can be dissolved," he said. He explained that using one's voice can lead to personal happiness and bring joy to others. For non-singers, simply listening to music allows for complete immersion and self-forgetfulness. Similarly, surrendering to dance can help alleviate pain. "To overcome suffering, we should all incorporate some form of art into our lives," the pontiff advised.

Dignitaries Present at the Event

The event was attended by several notable figures, including Sri Kshetra Dharmasthala Dharmadhikari D Veerendra Heggade and Puttur MLA Ashok Kumar Rai, among others, underscoring the significance of the occasion in promoting cultural and artistic endeavors in the region.
