Historic Temple Roof Collapse in Mahabaleshwar Triggers Heritage Safety Concerns
A portion of the roof at the historic Shri Krishnabai Temple, a revered pilgrimage site located in Old Mahabaleshwar, collapsed on Sunday, raising serious concerns about the condition of heritage structures across the region. The incident occurred in the Mahabaleshwar tehsil of Satara district, a site sacred as the origin point of five significant rivers: the Krishna, Koyna, Venna, Savitri, and Gayatri.
Residents Blame Archaeological Negligence for the Incident
Local residents have pointed fingers at the department of archaeology, alleging negligence as the primary cause behind the collapse. They are demanding an immediate and thorough assessment followed by prompt restoration efforts to preserve this important shrine. The temple, which has suffered from years of neglect, recently saw the archaeology department initiate excavation and cleaning works, bringing it back into public focus. Currently, the temple falls under the jurisdiction of the archaeology department, with a staff member appointed to oversee its maintenance and cleanliness.
Narrow Escape During Voluntary Cleaning Operation
The collapse happened while a group of local youths—Amit Zhade, Saurabh Gole, Saurav Salekar, and Dadaso Londhe—were voluntarily cleaning the temple premises. They were engaged in removing silt that had accumulated over time from the water tank situated below the Gomukh in front of the temple. As part of this process, the water from the tank was drained, and one of the youths had entered the Gomukh area to clear the silt lodged inside it.
At that critical moment, a section of the temple's roof suddenly gave way and collapsed directly into the water tank below. Miraculously, all the youths managed to escape unhurt, narrowly avoiding what could have been a major tragedy. This fortunate outcome highlights the potential dangers posed by the temple's deteriorating condition.
Calls for Investigation and Urgent Restoration
In the aftermath of the incident, Amit Zhade voiced the community's frustrations, stating, "Due to the lack of proper maintenance and timely repairs for several years, the temple has reached a severely dilapidated condition. This incident is a direct result of the negligence of the department of archaeology." He emphasized the necessity of conducting an official panchnama (detailed report) to investigate the exact reasons behind the collapse and to undertake urgent restoration work to prevent further damage.
Attempts to contact officials from the archaeology department for a response were unsuccessful at the time of reporting, leaving many questions unanswered about the department's plans for addressing the temple's structural issues. The collapse serves as a stark reminder of the broader challenges facing heritage preservation in India, where many ancient structures are at risk due to inadequate upkeep and bureaucratic delays.
This event has sparked a renewed call for action from both local communities and heritage conservationists, urging authorities to prioritize the protection and restoration of culturally significant sites like the Shri Krishnabai Temple to safeguard them for future generations.
