Singheshwar Sthan in Madhepura Gears Up for Grand Mahashivaratri Fair

Singheshwar Sthan, a prominent religious center in Madhepura district, is preparing to host a government-sponsored month-long fair in celebration of Mahashivaratri, starting this Sunday. This ancient site, home to a revered Shiv shrine, attracts thousands of devotees annually for spiritual observances and cultural festivities.

Historical and Religious Significance of the Shrine

Situated on the banks of the Parwane river, a tributary of the Kosi, and approximately 7 kilometers north of Madhepura railway station under the East Central Railway, the shrine holds deep historical roots. It is believed to date back to the pre-Ramayan era, with legends stating that King Dashrath received blessings here from Sringi Rishi for sons, including Lord Ram, leading to the place's name derivation from the sage.

The Shiv Linga at the shrine is considered the exposed peak of a submerged mountain, remarkably untouched by the devastating floods of the nearby Kosi river over the centuries. Devotees, including many from neighboring Nepal, traditionally offer "Jal" (water) over the Linga during Mahashivaratri, a practice that has been part of the fair since ancient times, traditionally beginning with the onset of Falgun Shukla Paksh in the Hindu calendar.

Enhanced Security and Infrastructure for the Fair

To manage the expected large crowds, the district administration has implemented comprehensive security measures. CCTV cameras have been installed at key points around the shrine and fairground, and a temporary fair police station with officers and personnel has been established at the center of the grounds, ensuring 24-hour deployment for safety.

Infrastructure improvements include:

  • Steel grills placed between Shiv Ganga and the shrine to regulate queues and maintain order.
  • Illumination of the shrine with colorful LED lights for better visibility and ambiance.
  • Establishment of a help counter to assist devotees with inquiries and support.

Accommodation options have been arranged, with devotees able to stay in inns, dharamshalas, and a government guest house. The administration, in collaboration with the Sringi Rishi foundation, has also issued a traffic route chart to minimize inconvenience and ensure smooth movement.

Facilities and Activities for Visitors

The fairground offers a variety of amenities and entertainment for attendees. Vendors have been allotted spaces for:

  1. Shops selling religious items and local crafts.
  2. Theatres and cinema halls for cultural performances.
  3. Swings and other recreational activities.

Government departments, such as agriculture and fishery, will set up stalls to promote modern farming techniques and sustainable practices. To enhance accessibility, only pedestrians will be allowed inside the fairground, with a separate parking area available for a nominal token fee.

Rajkumar, executive officer of Singheshwar Nagar Panchayat, stated, "The fair ground was already cleaned, sanitized, and electrified. Work is ongoing for potable water and toilet facilities. Devotees will enjoy better amenities this time on this occasion." District Magistrate Abhishek Ranjan and SP Sandeep Singh have personally inspected the preparations to ensure everything is in place for a successful event.

This year's fair promises to blend traditional religious fervor with modern conveniences, making it a memorable experience for all participants while preserving the sacred heritage of Singheshwar Sthan.
