Songkran Festival Celebrated with Grandeur at Bodh Gaya's Mahabodhi Mahavihara
The sacred town of Bodh Gaya witnessed a vibrant celebration of Thailand's New Year festival, Songkran, on Monday. The event took place at the historic Mahabodhi Mahavihara, a UNESCO World Heritage site, under the revered Bodhi tree where Lord Buddha is believed to have attained enlightenment.
Traditional Rituals and Grand Procession
A grand procession marked the beginning of the festivities, featuring a beautifully flower-decorated Buddha statue. The procession commenced from the Royal Thai Monastery in Bodh Gaya and proceeded to the Mahabodhi Mahavihara, drawing attention from locals and visitors alike.
At the Mahavihara, a ceremonial offering of water to Lord Buddha was performed beneath the Bodhi tree. This ritual, central to Songkran, symbolises purification, renewal, and the washing away of misfortunes to invite blessings for the new year.

The programme was led by Mahashweta Maharathi, the member secretary of the Bodh Gaya Temple Management Committee (BTMC). The event saw the presence of Mahavihara chief monk Bhikkhu Chalinda, along with other resident monks, the abbot of the Royal Thai Monastery, and monks from monasteries representing various Buddhist countries in Bodh Gaya.
A large contingent of Thai monks and nuns participated, emphasising the international appeal of the festival. Their involvement underscored the spiritual significance of Bodh Gaya as a global hub for Buddhist traditions.
