Over 2 Lakh Devotees Throng Srirangam Temple as Sacred 'Paramapatha Vaasal' Opens
Srirangam Temple Opens Sacred Gate for Devotees

In a powerful display of devotion, a massive sea of worshippers converged upon the revered Arulmigu Ranganathaswamy Temple in Srirangam, Trichy, in the pre-dawn hours of Tuesday. The occasion was the ceremonial opening of the sacred 'paramapatha vaasal' or 'sorgavaasal', a gateway of immense spiritual significance, which was unlocked to resonant chants of "Govinda Govinda".

A Night of Anticipation Culminates in Dawn Ritual

Devotees began gathering at the temple complex from Monday night itself, eager to partake in the annual festival that spans 22 days. The pivotal moment arrived around 4:30 AM when the processional deity, Lord Namperumal, was brought out in a grand holy procession. The deity, magnificently adorned with gem-studded armour, a kilimaalai (parrot garland), and the Pandian crown, was taken through the Rajamahendiran thirusuttru, Naazhikettan gateway, and Kulasekaran suttru.

Hundreds had waited through the night for a glimpse of the Lord. The procession made a brief halt at the Vraja Nadhi Mandapam for the recitation of hymns. Finally, at 5:45 AM, amid heightened devotional fervor, the sacred paramapatha vaasal was opened, allowing Lord Namperumal to pass through this holy gateway.

Massive Turnout and Tight Security Arrangements

Temple officials estimated that approximately two lakh (200,000) devotees had visited the shrine by Tuesday evening, underscoring the event's massive scale. Ensuring smooth conduct and safety for such a large gathering required significant effort. Authorities deployed around 3,000 police personnel for security and crowd management duties at the temple.

The event saw the presence of HR&CE minister P K Sekar Babu, along with senior officials from the HR&CE department and the district administration. The minister also participated in the religious proceedings, distributing copies of the 'Thirupaavai' book to devotees.

Devotees Applaud Improved Crowd Management

Following the darshan through the sacred gate, Lord Namperumal was placed at the Thousand Pillar Mandapam for public viewing throughout the day. Many devotees noted the improved arrangements compared to previous years. R Vigneshwaran, a devotee from Samayapuram, specifically mentioned that the crowds were managed more effectively this time, allowing for a more orderly and peaceful spiritual experience for all attendees.

The successful opening of the sorgavaasal marks a key highlight in the temple's annual festival calendar, drawing believers from across the region to seek blessings and witness the majestic procession of the deity through the gateway believed to be a path to spiritual liberation.
