The Indian art world is in mourning following the demise of Ram Vanji Sutar, the legendary sculptor who created the monumental Statue of Unity. The centenarian artist breathed his last at his Noida residence late on Wednesday night, as confirmed by his family. He was 100 years old and had been unwell due to age-related health issues.

In a statement shared with the press on Thursday, his son Anil Sutar conveyed the somber news. "It is with profound grief that we inform you of the passing of my father Shri Ram Vanji Sutar on 17th December midnight at our residence," he said. Born on February 19, 1925, in Gondur village within Maharashtra's Dhule district, Sutar found his calling in sculpting early in life. His journey from humble beginnings to becoming one of India's most revered artists is a testament to his dedication and skill. His exceptional talent was recognized early when he received a gold medal from Mumbai's prestigious Sir J.J. School of Art and Architecture.
