The Indian art world is in mourning following the demise of Ram Vanji Sutar, the legendary sculptor who created the monumental Statue of Unity. The centenarian artist breathed his last at his Noida residence late on Wednesday night, as confirmed by his family. He was 100 years old and had been unwell due to age-related health issues.
A Life Dedicated to Art and Nation
In a statement shared with the press on Thursday, his son Anil Sutar conveyed the somber news. "It is with profound grief that we inform you of the passing of my father Shri Ram Vanji Sutar on 17th December midnight at our residence," he said. Born on February 19, 1925, in Gondur village within Maharashtra's Dhule district, Sutar found his calling in sculpting early in life. His journey from humble beginnings to becoming one of India's most revered artists is a testament to his dedication and skill. His exceptional talent was recognized early when he received a gold medal from Mumbai's prestigious Sir J.J. School of Art and Architecture.
Iconic Creations That Define a Nation
Over a career spanning several decades, Ram Sutar's chisel gave form to some of India's most recognizable public monuments. His works are not just sculptures but landmarks of national identity. Among his most celebrated pieces are the serene, meditative statue of Mahatma Gandhi and the powerful equestrian statue of the warrior king Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. Both these masterpieces stand proudly on the premises of the Parliament of India in New Delhi, witnessing the nation's democracy in action.
The Monumental Statue of Unity: A Lasting Legacy
However, Sutar's most colossal and internationally acclaimed achievement remains the Statue of Unity. Soaring at 182 meters, it is the world's tallest statue. Located in Gujarat, this engineering and artistic marvel is a tribute to Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, India's first deputy prime minister and home minister. It has become a defining symbol of modern Indian sculpture and a major tourist attraction, immortalizing both Patel's legacy and Sutar's visionary artistry. The statue stands as a powerful reminder of his ability to blend grand scale with intricate detail.
Ram Sutar's passing marks the end of an era for Indian sculpture. His body of work, etched in stone and bronze across the country, continues to inspire awe and national pride, ensuring that his legacy will endure for generations to come.
