Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams Announces Crackdown on VIP Sirens to Preserve Sacred Atmosphere
Tirupati: In a significant move aimed at protecting the spiritual sanctity of one of Hinduism's most revered pilgrimage sites, the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) is planning to implement a comprehensive ban on the use of VIP sirens within the sacred precincts of Tirumala. This initiative also targets the indiscriminate use of police sirens by local law enforcement agencies as well as the temple's own vigilance and departmental vehicles.
Addressing Sound Pollution in the Sacred Seven Hills
The primary objective behind this decisive action is to substantially reduce sound pollution and meticulously preserve the divine spiritual ambience that characterizes the holy abode of Lord Venkateswara. Tirumala annually welcomes nearly 2.5 crore devotees from across the globe, including constitutional dignitaries, political leaders, celebrities, and numerous influential personalities from around the world.
However, alongside genuine VIPs, a considerable number of pseudo VIPs also frequent Tirumala in large numbers. The TTD has historically faced an insurmountable challenge in accurately distinguishing between authentic VIPs and imposters, making the task of curbing the rampant use of VIP sirens and excessive honking particularly difficult to enforce effectively.
Rising Vehicle Numbers and Pilgrim Influx
With the consistent increase in pilgrim influx to Tirumala over recent years, the number of vehicles traversing the twin ghat roads and circulating throughout the hill town has seen a steep and dramatic rise. On average weekdays, over 9,000 vehicles ply between the twin ghat roads daily, while this number escalates significantly, crossing the 11,000 mark during weekends and peak pilgrimage periods.
Given this substantial daily vehicular traffic, implementing a genuine and effective crackdown on vehicles responsible for causing disruptive sound pollution and disturbing the spiritual fabric of the hill town has proven nearly impossible until now. Consequently, over many years, the indiscriminate and frequent use of VIP sirens and blaring police horns has not only created a pervasive sense of annoyance among visiting devotees but has also consistently disturbed the sacred and tranquil atmosphere that defines Tirumala.
Executive Officer's Directive for Change
Taking serious note of this longstanding issue, TTD Executive Officer Muddada Ravichandra has issued explicit directives to the vigilance and security department, along with local police authorities, to immediately curb and restrict the indiscriminate use of VIP sirens and police horns at Tirumala. This ban will apply universally, with exceptions permitted only in genuinely exceptional and emergency cases that warrant such auditory alerts.
According to Ravichandra, the sacred seven hills should resonate exclusively with the divine chants of 'Govinda Namams' and other spiritual discourses around the clock. There should be absolutely no scope for VIP sirens, police sirens, or high-decibel honking to cause disruptive sound pollution within the holy environs of Tirumala. He firmly reiterated that the TTD management is committed to initiating concrete steps and establishing robust mechanisms to address this critical issue with a comprehensive, long-term perspective, ensuring sustainable solutions for future generations of devotees.
