Udupi Christian Community Honors 1700th Anniversary of Historic Nicene Creed
The Christian community in Udupi came together in a significant ecumenical gathering at the UBM Memorial Hall to celebrate the 1700th anniversary of the Nicene Creed. This milestone event, held on Thursday, was dedicated to honoring the creed as a defining pillar of Christian faith and a powerful symbol of unity across denominations.
Collaborative Organization and Spiritual Messages
The commemoration was jointly organized by the UBM Church Udupi, the Ecumenical Commission of the Diocese of Udupi, and the All Karnataka United Christian Forum for Human Rights. In his keynote message, Rev Gerald Isaac Lobo, the apostolic administrator of the Udupi Diocese, emphasized that the Nicene Creed serves as the foundational bedrock of Christian belief.
Rev Lobo stated, "Regardless of the specific gatherings or traditions Christians belong to, proclaiming the same creed actively expresses and promotes a profound sense of unity among all believers. The Church consistently underscores the critical importance of this unity." He further referenced the Second Vatican Council, noting that restoring Christian unity remains one of the Church's primary concerns.
He elaborated that true unity originates from spiritual conversion and can only be achieved through humility, mutual forgiveness, and collective prayer. "The Christian communities in the Udupi region exemplify a beautiful blend of diverse traditions. Here, people not only coexist in harmony but also pray together, discovering unity within their diversity," Rev Lobo added.
Enduring Inspiration and Theological Insights
Rt Rev Hemachandra Kumar, Bishop of the Church of South India, Karnataka Southern Diocese, highlighted the enduring relevance of the Nicene Creed. He described it as a strong foundation for the faith Christians place in God, inspiring believers to live in unity even after 1,700 years.
Bishop Kumar explained, "The Holy Bible provides numerous references on strengthening the Christian Church. The daily recitation of the creed within congregations plays a vital role in reinforcing unity and solidarity among the faithful."

The event featured insightful lectures by Rev Fr Rovel Shubadeep D'Souza, director of the Divine Spring Retreat Centre in Goa, and Rev HM Watson, principal of Karnataka Theological College in Balmatta, Mangaluru. Their presentations delved into the historical background and deep spiritual significance of the Nicene Creed, offering attendees a richer understanding of its legacy.
A special faith hymn presentation was performed by Rev Santosh, Sr Priya, and their team, adding a cultural and devotional dimension to the celebration. The gathering saw participation from a wide array of clergy, pastors, religious sisters, and faithful representing Roman Catholic, Orthodox, CSI, and UBM Churches.
