Vayalar Ramavarma's 50th Death Anniversary and Literary Award Golden Jubilee Observed
The 50th death anniversary of the renowned poet Vayalar Ramavarma will be commemorated on October 27, marking a significant milestone in Kerala's cultural landscape. This occasion coincides with the golden jubilee of the Vayalar Literary Award, which was instituted in 1979 in his memory and will present its 50th award this year, creating a dual celebration of his enduring legacy.
Year-Long 'Vayalar Year' Celebrations Commence
To honor both anniversaries, year-long celebrations titled 'Vayalar Year' have commenced on October 27, 2025. Various organizations and institutions across Kerala and beyond are conducting programmes related to the poet's legacy, as requested by the Vayalar Trust, to promote his contributions to literature and music.
Musical Evening at Manaveeyam Veedhi
In continuation of the observances, the G Devarajan Master Foundation will organize its annual 'Devarajan Ganasandhya' on Wednesday, coinciding with Vayalar's birth anniversary. The event will be held at Manaveeyam Veedhi from 6pm onwards, featuring a musical evening with performances by noted playback singers such as Kavalam Sreekumar, Kallara Gopan, G Sreeram, Ravi Shankar, Rajeev ONV, Vijesh Gopal, Bijoy, Rajalakshmi, Dr Rashmi, Aparna Rajeev, Saritha Rajeev, Athira, and Latha George. They will present songs written by Vayalar, highlighting his lyrical prowess.
Monthly 'Vayalar Ganasandhya' Programmes Planned
As part of the year-long observance, similar 'Vayalar Ganasandhya' programmes will be held every month at Manaveeyam Veedhi until October 27. Various music organizations will take the lead in these events, ensuring a continuous tribute to the poet's work throughout the year.
The celebrations underscore Vayalar Ramavarma's lasting impact on Malayalam poetry and music, with the Vayalar Literary Award serving as a testament to his influence. The golden jubilee of the award adds to the significance, recognizing outstanding contributions to literature in his name.
