However, a recent incident in Mumbai has shattered this peaceful image, turning a routine booking into a violent confrontation that has captured widespread attention online. Videos of the altercation have spread rapidly across social media platforms, sparking intense debates about customer safety protocols and the pressures faced by gig economy workers.

What Triggered the Violent Massage Session?

The incident involved Shahnaz Wahid Sayyed, a 46-year-old public relations professional residing in Bhakti Park, Wadala East, who booked a massage through Urban Company to address her frozen shoulder pain. Living with her 18-year-old son, Sayyed expected a professional therapeutic session to alleviate her discomfort.

The masseuse, identified as 32-year-old Ashwini Shivnath Vartapi, arrived at the residence with her portable massage equipment. However, the session never commenced as Sayyed immediately objected to the condition and size of the massage bed, finding it unsuitable for her home environment. According to reports, tensions began brewing from the initial interaction, with Sayyed expressing dissatisfaction with both the equipment and the professional's demeanor.

Sayyed promptly cancelled the booking through the application and requested a refund. The situation deteriorated when the masseuse reportedly resisted leaving the premises, leading to a heated exchange captured in viral footage circulating on Instagram and X. In the recording, Sayyed can be heard urging the professional to leave her home respectfully, emphasizing the inappropriate nature of the confrontation within her private residence.

From Therapeutic Session to Physical Altercation

What began as verbal disagreement quickly escalated into physical violence, with Sayyed's son documenting the entire incident. The footage shows both women engaged in aggressive physical contact, including hair-pulling, punching, and pushing. At one point, the client throws the masseuse onto the massage bed, while later sequences show the professional grabbing Sayyed by her hair during the struggle.

Sayyed subsequently alleged that the masseuse pulled her hair aggressively, scratched her eye area, punched her face multiple times, and pushed her to the ground before abruptly leaving the premises. Her son, attempting to intervene and protect his mother, can be heard shouting warnings about police involvement and consequences for the professional's career, characterizing the behavior as unwarranted aggression within their home.

Interestingly, the masseuse was also recording the interaction during the confrontation and resisted when Sayyed attempted to retrieve her bag, adding another layer of complexity to the already volatile situation.

Police Intervention and Professional Consequences

Wadala police authorities registered a non-cognisable offense against Vartapi under Section 115(2) of the Indian Penal Code, along with relevant provisions from the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita. While no arrests have been made initially, the complainant has been advised to approach a magistrate for further legal proceedings regarding the matter.

Urban Company took swift action following the viral circulation of the video footage, terminating the masseuse's association with their platform. Police investigations revealed certain discrepancies in the professional's application profile details during their preliminary examination of the case.
