Agra's Giant Paratha Joins UP's 'One District One Cuisine'

The famous large-sized paratha of Agra has been officially included in the Uttar Pradesh government's 'One District One Cuisine' (ODOC) scheme. This initiative aims to promote traditional dishes from each of the state's 75 districts. With this addition, Agra now boasts four products under the scheme: petha, gajak, dalmoth, and paratha.

Unique Characteristics of Agra's Paratha

Agra's parathas are known for their generous size, cooked on heavy iron griddles (tawas) and fried in desi ghee until crisp and golden. This dish is a staple at eateries and roadside stalls across the city, particularly in neighborhoods such as Belanganj, Bijlighar, and Mantola.

Support for Traders and Vendors

Under the ODOC scheme, traders and food entrepreneurs will receive support to expand production. Small and large food vendors will be linked with online food delivery platforms, enabling them to reach wider markets both within India and abroad. Officials stated that the initiative is expected to create numerous employment opportunities.

Shailendra Singh, deputy commissioner at the District Industries and Enterprise Promotion Centre, told TOI that all possible support would be extended to help traders gain wider recognition. "The government will provide assistance of up to Rs 20 lakh for improving product quality, packaging, and branding. Traders and vendors will also receive specialized training through various departments to help expand their businesses," he said.

Impact on Local Economy

The inclusion of Agra's paratha in the ODOC scheme is anticipated to boost the local economy by promoting culinary tourism and providing financial aid to small businesses. The initiative highlights the rich food heritage of Agra and aims to preserve traditional cooking methods while adapting to modern market demands.

With this move, Agra's paratha joins the ranks of other iconic local products that have gained state-level recognition, further cementing the city's reputation as a hub of diverse and flavorful cuisine.
