Mango Season in Chennai Awaits Summer Showers for Full Flavor and Harvest
Chennai Mango Season Delayed, Awaits Rain for Better Harvest

Mango Season in Chennai Begins Slowly, Awaits Crucial Summer Showers

The much-anticipated mango season has commenced in Chennai, but it is off to a sluggish start, largely due to the absence of the first summer showers. Farmers across Andhra Pradesh and other southern states are delaying large-scale harvests, holding out for rain to enhance the fruit's size and flavor profile.

Early Harvests Lack Sweetness and Aroma

A limited supply of early-season Banganapalli mangoes from Andhra Pradesh has trickled into the Koyambedu wholesale fruit market. Currently, these mangoes are priced at approximately 120 rupees per kilogram wholesale, with retail prices soaring up to 220 rupees. However, customers report that the fruit is deficient in sweetness and aroma, attributing this to the premature season.

K Jayaraman, a wholesale trader and member of the market management committee, explained, "This is because the season has not picked up yet." Instead of the typical 50 to 60 truckloads that flood the market during peak months, fewer than 15 arrive daily. He added, "We expect the season to pick up by the end of April. The quality will be good if there are summer showers."

Farmers Anticipate Robust Harvests of Popular Varieties

Farmers from Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, and Maharashtra are optimistic about a bountiful harvest of various mango varieties, including Sindhoora, Imam Pasand, and Alphonso. Vendors predict that farmers from within Tamil Nadu and Palakkad in Kerala will begin supplying these varieties by early May. Additionally, Banganapalli mangoes from Andhra Pradesh are expected to inundate the market around the same time.

Importance of Pre-Monsoon Rains for Mango Quality

Experts emphasize that pre-monsoon rains play a vital role in mango cultivation. The added moisture helps the fruit bulk up, increasing pulp content while simultaneously washing away dust, pollutants, and pesticide residues. This natural process is crucial for achieving the desired sweetness, aroma, and overall quality that consumers eagerly await each season.
