Goa Cashew Fest 2026 to Blend Cashew Promotion with Safe Driving Awareness
Panaji is set to host the three-day Goa Cashew Fest 2026 from April 10 to 12, an event that will not only showcase the state's renowned feni and cashew products but also launch a crucial campaign for road safety. Organized by the Goa Forest Development Corporation (GFDC), this fourth edition aims to celebrate agricultural heritage while addressing pressing community issues.
'Drive Safe Goa' Campaign Takes Center Stage
Deviya Rane, chairperson of GFDC, emphasized that the festival's most significant aspect this year is the 'Drive Safe Goa' campaign. "We have a lot of things to showcase this time, but the most important aspect of the festival is our campaign 'Drive Safe Goa'," Rane stated. With a noticeable rise in accidents across the region, the festival platform is being leveraged to create widespread awareness about responsible driving practices, making it a unique blend of cultural promotion and public welfare.
Focus on Cashew Cultivation and Feni Production
The event will feature expert discussions on cashew cultivation techniques, feni production methods, and desilting processes. Industry stakeholders are scheduled to share their experiences in navigating business challenges amid increasing competition and evolving market trends. Having already secured a Geographical Indication (GI) tag for feni, Rane highlighted that the next step is the establishment of a cashew board, as announced by Chief Minister Pramod Sawant in his recent budget speech.
Sustainability and Rural Livelihoods at the Forefront
Rane explained that the festival will strongly focus on sustainability and supporting rural livelihoods by honoring Goa's rich agricultural legacy. It provides stakeholders with valuable visibility and offers the public an opportunity to understand how the cashew industry has maintained its roots despite competitive pressures. "Goa has a special connection with cashews. It is not just some fruit. It has a legacy which needs to be highlighted," she remarked, underscoring the cultural significance of cashews in the state.
Rejuvenation Efforts and Increased Cultivation
Since the inception of the festival, GFDC has initiated efforts to rejuvenate cashew plantations in key areas. Rejuvenation projects in Quepem, Canacona, and Ponda have already begun, with positive results showing an expansion in the area under cashew cultivation. Experts have warned that ageing trees are a primary factor behind declining cashew yields, making these rejuvenation efforts critical for the industry's future.
Festival Highlights and Stalls
Attendees can look forward to 32 food stalls offering a diverse array of cashew-based products, along with beverage stalls. Some of these stalls will be managed by self-help groups, further emphasizing the festival's commitment to community empowerment and economic support.
