Mangaluru Embraces Premium Thai Jackfruit Varieties at Unique Tasting Festival

The coastal city of Mangaluru is experiencing a growing fascination with premium Thai varieties of jackfruit, celebrated for their exceptional productivity, early maturation, and remarkably sweet flavor profiles. A distinctive festival held at Chiguru Nursery in Kulur on Sunday provided visitors with an unprecedented opportunity to sample multiple jackfruit varieties before selecting saplings for their own cultivation.

Introducing Superior Varieties to the Community

Sarvesh Rao, the nursery owner and founder of Team Mangalore, emphasized that the primary objective was to acquaint local residents with these superior Thai jackfruit cultivars. Rao personally sourced the grafts during a visit to Thailand for a kite festival in 2018-19 and has since propagated them extensively at his nursery.

The idea is to familiarize people in Mangaluru with these superior varieties, Rao explained. The Phet Damrong trees began yielding last year, and this season I harvested around 25 fruits, which I preserved specifically for this tasting event. Currently, about three fruits remain on the tree.

Highlighted Varieties and Their Distinct Characteristics

The festival showcased an impressive array of jackfruit varieties, each with unique attributes:

  • Phet Damrong: A renowned Thai variety prized for its exceptionally sweet taste, rich flavor, vibrant golden-yellow flesh, and large, thick arils with minimal latex content.
  • Thong Prasert: Often called Golden Excellence, this variety is valued for its bright golden flesh, sweet taste, and distinctive texture that is both crunchy and soft without being watery.
  • Other showcased varieties: The Singapore variety, Mangala Early, Phet Racha (another popular Thai cultivar), and J29, a Malaysian jackfruit variety.

Perfect for Urban Gardening and Limited Spaces

These Thai jackfruit trees offer particular advantages for urban households with space constraints. The trees maintain a compact growth habit, typically reaching heights of only 12 to 16 feet. Remarkably, they begin fruiting within just one year of planting, making them an excellent choice for home gardens and small agricultural plots.

Strategic Timing for Maximum Impact

Rao deliberately scheduled the festival earlier than traditional jackfruit events, which usually occur after mid-May. This strategic timing allowed visitors to experience the fruit during its peak season for these specific varieties. The early festival also helped participants better understand which varieties thrive under Mangaluru's prevailing climate conditions and can be successfully cultivated locally.

The growing interest in these premium Thai jackfruit varieties represents a significant shift in local agricultural preferences, combining international horticultural excellence with practical urban gardening solutions. As more residents discover these compact, high-yielding trees with their intensely sweet fruits, Mangaluru's landscape may soon feature more diverse and productive jackfruit cultivation than ever before.
