Nagpur's Historic Coffee House Forced into Early Closure by Severe LPG Shortage
The legendary Indian Coffee House located in Nagpur's Sadar area has been compelled to drastically reduce its operating hours, now closing by noon each day instead of its traditional late evening schedule. This unprecedented early shutdown results from a critical shortage of cooking gas that has disrupted the establishment's decades-long routine.
Daily Operations Severely Curtailed
Staff members confirmed that the outlet will now operate exclusively during morning hours when customer footfall reaches its peak. "We are facing a severe shortage of cooking gas," waiters explained while reluctantly turning down orders from regular patrons who continued gathering for their customary conversations.
This historic coffee house, which has served as a cherished meeting point for intellectuals, professionals, and devoted regulars for over fifty years, typically remains open from early morning until well past 8:00 PM. Different groups of regular customers have established specific visiting hours throughout the day, creating a unique social ecosystem that now faces disruption.
Supply Chain Breakdown
Management sources revealed that the kitchen normally consumes approximately three LPG cylinders daily to maintain full operations. However, the current supply situation has deteriorated dramatically. "Previously we received fresh cylinder supplies four times each week, but now we only receive two cylinders at a time, and that only twice weekly," disclosed an informed source.
A staff member elaborated on the escalating crisis: "We managed to maintain normal operations until about a week ago using our reserve stock, but now that our emergency supply has been completely exhausted, we have no alternative but to close early each day."
Patrons Express Deep Concern
Regular customers have voiced significant concern about the curtailed operating hours. P G Philip, a real estate agent and frequent patron, expressed his disappointment: "Many of us visit multiple times throughout the day—sometimes simply to meet friends, other times to conduct client meetings. It's truly unfortunate that this iconic establishment must close early due to this gas supply crisis."
The coffee house has long served as more than just a dining establishment; it functions as a community hub where relationships are nurtured, ideas are exchanged, and professional connections are forged. The reduced hours threaten to disrupt these valuable social functions that have developed organically over generations.
The management continues to seek solutions to the LPG supply problem while hoping to restore normal operations soon. Meanwhile, the early closures represent not just a business inconvenience but a cultural disruption for Nagpur's intellectual and social communities who have relied on this historic venue for decades.
