PM Modi Thanks Tea Garden Workers, Recalls Humble Beginnings on International Tea Day
International Tea Day, celebrated annually on May 21, recognizes the cultural, economic, and social significance of tea worldwide. The United Nations officially recognized this day in 2019 after a proposal by tea-producing nations, with the first UN-recognized celebration taking place in 2020. In India, however, tea is not merely a beverage but a daily ritual that begins with simmering water. The soft bubbling sound creates a calming rhythm as fresh tea leaves unfurl, releasing their deep aroma into the air, making homes more relaxing. Brewing tea is a moment of pause and connection that brings people together, much like it brought Prime Minister Narendra Modi closer to tea garden workers during a recent speech, as shared on the official Instagram handle of the BJP.
What Did PM Modi Say?
In a reel video posted by the BJP's official Instagram handle (bjp4india), PM Modi recalled his humble beginnings and expressed gratitude to Assam's tea garden workers. He stated, "Aur mere liye toh, mere tea garden workers ka samaan karna matlab, main khud ke karz utar raha hoon." He elaborated, "Kyunki ap chai baagan mein kaam karte the, door wahan Gujarat ke mere gaon mein wo chai ki patti pahuchti thi, aur main chai bechkar yahan tak pahuch gaya." This translates to: For PM Modi, honoring tea garden workers is like repaying a personal debt. The tea leaves cultivated by these workers traveled all the way to his village in Gujarat, and by selling that tea, he was able to reach his current position. His speech concluded with a standing ovation for his heartfelt gratitude.
Why PM Modi Can't Enjoy Chai Like Before
In an April 2019 exclusive interview with India Today, PM Modi was asked whether he could drink tea on the roadside as he used to, or if SPG (Special Protection Group) rules prevent him. He replied, "They are also human beings, they do understand my helplessness but I've to follow their rules." The Special Protection Group is an elite security force responsible for protecting the Prime Minister of India and, at times, former prime ministers and their immediate family members. This security protocol restricts his ability to enjoy chai freely as before.
PM Modi's acknowledgment of tea garden workers highlights the deep connection between India's tea industry and its cultural fabric, while also shedding light on the constraints of his position.
