Sambalpur's Sarasatia Sweet Seeks GI Tag for National Recognition
The district administration in Sambalpur has officially launched the process to secure a Geographical Indication (GI) tag for sarasatia, the renowned traditional sweet of the region. This initiative aims to protect and promote the unique culinary heritage of Sambalpur at a national level.
Collector's Vision for Sarasatia
Collector Siddheshwar Baliram Bondar emphasized that sarasatia is not just a sweet but a cultural icon, cherished for its distinctive taste and traditional medicinal properties. "Granting it a GI tag will help establish its unique identity nationally, ensuring its legacy is preserved and recognized," he stated. The sweet has long been a favorite among locals, and this move is expected to elevate its status beyond regional boundaries.
Documentation and Support for GI Application
Officials have completed all necessary steps for the GI application, including:
- Compiling required documentation and historical records
- Forming a producers' society to represent the community
- Submitting the application through ORMAS (Odisha Rural Development and Marketing Society)
Technical support has been provided by experts from OUAT (Odisha University of Agriculture and Technology), ensuring the application meets all regulatory standards.
Expected Benefits of GI Recognition
The GI tag is anticipated to bring multiple advantages:
- Branding and Promotion: Enhancing the sweet's visibility in wider markets
- Economic Boost: Increasing demand and benefiting families traditionally involved in its preparation
- Cultural Preservation: Safeguarding the traditional methods and ingredients unique to Sambalpur
Official sources highlight that this recognition will not only boost local economies but also celebrate Odisha's rich culinary traditions.
Timeline and Additional Initiatives
The administration expects the GI process to be completed within four to six months. Concurrently, steps will be taken to promote the cultivation of the 'ganjer' plant, a key ingredient in sarasatia. This effort aims to ensure a sustainable supply chain and support local agriculture, further strengthening the sweet's authenticity and quality.
This move underscores Sambalpur's commitment to preserving its cultural heritage while fostering economic growth through traditional industries.
