Comfort is defining summer wardrobes this season, and the Spring/Summer 2026 runways reflected that shift with lightweight, versatile and polished skirt silhouettes. The result: Skirts are now among the season's most practical style heroes. From Chanel's dramatic feathered skirts and asymmetrical hemlines to Balenciaga and Dior's voluminous puffball silhouettes, designers made a compelling case for the comeback of statement skirts.
The message from the runway was clear: Skirts are back — this time with more character, movement and modern appeal. The effect has trickled quickly into retail and social media, where a fresh crop of skirt styles is emerging as this season's go-to.
Versatile silhouettes make skirts more wearable today
Mitali Ambekar, celebrity fashion stylist, shares, "Influences from the 90s and early 2000s are returning but with updated cuts and contemporary styling. Uneven hems, cascading panels and voluminous forms are crafted to flow and shift with the body. Softer elements like lace are now paired with structured pieces, giving them a more confident feel. Drop waists, and raw finishes reflect a move toward effortless styling. Lightweight fabrics and relaxed constructions allow even statement skirts to feel comfortable and wearable."
"Today, skirts play with layers, transparency, mixed textures, and complex silhouettes to create depth. They can be styled in versatile ways, hence fit seamlessly into daily dressing," adds Ambekar.
Meghna Goyal, fashion designer and founder of a clothing brand, notes, "There's a shift toward pieces that feel a bit more styled without being over the top. Today, even statement styles are designed to fit into everyday wardrobes. You'll see more fluid fabrics, softer structure, and details like sheer layers that add interest without making the piece feel difficult to style."
Trending skirts this summer
- Sheer skirts (Chanel): Transparent, translucent fabric. Light, layered, and add movement without bulk. How to style: Pair sheer pieces with an oversized tee or a relaxed top. Style a long sheer skirt with a micro/mini skirt/shorts. Add heels to complete the look.
- Asymmetrical hemline skirts (Loewe): Create movement through uneven cuts and angles. How to style: Keep everything else simple. A fitted tank works best so the hemline stands out.

- Lace-trimmed skirts (Shibani Akhtar): Skirts finished with lace detailing along the hem. How to style: Offset the skirt's softness with structured layers like blazers, crisp shirts.
- Puffball/bubble skirts (Dior): Rounded, slightly inflated shape created by tucking the hem inward. How to style: Pair them with simple, fitted tops to let the skirt remain the focal point.
- Waterfall skirt (Chanel): Layered, cascading drapes that create fluid movement. How to style: Balance with structured, minimal tops and sleek footwear.
- Tiered skirts (Adeline Lee): Multiple layers that add volume and texture. How to style: Pair them with a fitted tank top, a singlet for balanced shape and proportions.
