Wallpaper Comeback: 5 Mistakes to Avoid for Home Decor

For a long time, wallpaper felt like something your grandmother had in her hallway. Heavy florals, dated borders, and that specific kind of sticky backing that peeled off in strips and left half the wall looking worse than before. So it made sense that a whole generation of homeowners went running toward plain painted walls and never looked back. But something has shifted, and wallpaper has made one of the most convincing comebacks in interior design.

Common Wallpaper Mistakes and How to Fix Them

Having helped hundreds of homeowners transform their living spaces all throughout India, Sidd Panda, Co-Founder and CEO of Magic Decor, told the Times of India about a recurring problem: after spending many hours selecting a beautiful design, the room suddenly becomes even more cramped-looking than when it had no wallpaper at all. Here is why, and how to change that.

Mistake 1: Wallpaper on Every Wall

Panda says wallpapering every wall is a big mistake. While the desire for restraint may be admirable when decorating in a small space, the right pattern can actually do wonders for your room when applied correctly. Applying an oversize pattern on each wall creates visual clutter. Doing so on just one accent wall creates the impression of depth and leads the eye into the room instead of creating visual confusion.

Mistake 2: Choosing Dramatic Wallpapers Everywhere

Panda speaks against the choice of dramatic wallpapers that are more in demand these days. Deep, dramatic wallpapers are not always a good idea. If you paint every wall in a room a dark color, the room is going to look really small. This is because dark colors absorb light and make it harder to see. The solution is simple: put dark wallpaper on one wall and a lighter wallpaper or paint color on the other three.

Mistake 3: Ignoring Stripe Direction

Horizontal stripes make a room look wider. Vertical stripes make it look taller. This is one of the most obvious mistakes homeowners make and is often ignored when choosing wallpaper. If you have a room with low ceilings, pick a vertical pattern to make it feel more open.

Mistake 4: Forgetting the Ceiling

People forget the ceiling, and according to the expert, the wallpaper should not just stop at the ceiling. This is like having a wall that is not completely decorated. When you use the wallpaper all the way up to the cornice line, or you use it with a white ceiling and the same skirting, you are making a frame for your walls. This frame makes your walls look taller. The wallpaper, skirting, and ceiling all work together to make your room look nice.

By avoiding these common mistakes, you can successfully incorporate wallpaper into your home and enjoy its transformative power without making your space feel cramped or cluttered.
