National carrier Air India has issued a formal travel advisory to its passengers, warning of potential disruptions to flight schedules due to a forecast of dense fog over the national capital and other parts of northern India.
Weather Department Predicts Dense Fog Blanket
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted that Delhi will experience dense fog on the morning of Friday, 18 December 2025. Similar conditions of shallow to moderate fog are also expected in several parts of northern and eastern India. The IMD further indicated that moderate to dense fog is likely during the morning hours of December 21 and 22 as well.
This advisory comes in the wake of recent disruptions, where low visibility from a thick fog blanket already led to the cancellation of at least 10 flights at Delhi's Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport on Wednesday, 17 December, as reported by news agency ANI.
Air India's Proactive Measures and Passenger Guidance
In a detailed post on social media platform X, Air India stated that the predicted weather conditions may affect flight schedules, with likely cascading effects across its network. While the airline is taking steps to minimise the impact, it acknowledged that deteriorating visibility may force adjustments, including delays and possible cancellations.
Passengers are strongly advised to check their flight status regularly on the Air India website before starting their journey to the airport. The airline has assured travellers that its ground staff will be available round-the-clock to assist with alternative arrangements for disrupted travel plans.
Leveraging the 'FogCare' Initiative
Air India highlighted its dedicated 'FogCare' initiative, designed specifically for such scenarios. Under this program:
- Passengers booked on select flights likely to be affected by fog will receive advance alerts on their registered mobile numbers.
- Eligible travellers have the option to change their flights without any additional payment.
- They can also choose to seek a full refund on their bookings without any penalty.
The airline emphasized that the safety and well-being of passengers and crew remain its top priority and thanked flyers for their patience.
Airport Authorities Activate Low Visibility Protocols
In response to the challenging conditions, Delhi Airport authorities confirmed that Low Visibility Procedures (LVP) are already in progress to manage operations. They have also urged all passengers to contact their respective airlines for the latest flight updates before heading to the airport.
With the winter fog season setting in, travellers flying in and out of North India are advised to stay informed, plan for potential delays, and utilise the flexible options provided by airlines like Air India to ensure a smoother travel experience.
