Bengaluru Airport Faces Major Flight Disruptions Over Weekend
Flight operations at Bengaluru's Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) experienced substantial disruption during the weekend, with a total of 19 international services cancelled between Saturday and Sunday. The cancellations primarily affected routes connecting Bengaluru with key West Asian destinations, creating significant inconvenience for hundreds of passengers traveling to and from the Gulf region.
Detailed Breakdown of Cancelled Flights
According to internal airport status reports, the cancellations included 10 outbound flights from Bengaluru and nine inbound services. The affected sectors spanned multiple major Gulf destinations:
- Dubai
- Abu Dhabi
- Doha
- Jeddah
- Riyadh
- Dammam
IndiGo operated the majority of the cancelled services, followed by Air India Express and Emirates. One Etihad departure was also impacted by the disruption.
Root Causes and Operational Impact
Airport officials confirmed that UAE routes bore the brunt of the disruption, accounting for more than half of the total cancellations. This was attributed to airspace restrictions across the region rather than weather-related events.
"This level of cancellation concentrated on Gulf sectors is not routine," an airport operations source stated anonymously. "It appears to be linked to airspace restrictions and operational adjustments."
The disruption spanned late-evening departures on Saturday and early-morning arrivals and departures on Sunday, indicating a cascading impact on aircraft rotations. A ground-handling executive explained the tight sequencing of international operations: "When an incoming aircraft is delayed or cancelled at origin, the outbound leg from Bengaluru is immediately affected. That ripple effect can continue into the next operational cycle."
Passenger Experience and Airport Response
Passengers at the airport reported confusion and last-minute schedule changes, with some learning about cancellations only after arriving at the terminal. Airline officials confirmed they provided rebooking arrangements and alternative options for affected travelers.
"Passengers are being accommodated on the next available services or offered refunds as per policy," an airline representative stated.
Despite the significant disruption to specific international sectors, officials maintained that overall airport operations remained normal. To assist affected travelers, a dedicated passenger help desk has been established at the kerbside (Level 3) of Terminal 2.
The concentrated nature of cancellations on Gulf routes highlights the vulnerability of international air travel to regional airspace restrictions and demonstrates how operational adjustments can create ripple effects across multiple flight cycles.
