Bhubaneswar-Singapore Flight Suspension Hits Odisha Tourism Hard

Odisha Tour Operators Grapple with Uncertainty as Key Flights Are Suspended

The suspension of the Bhubaneswar-Singapore flight, effective from March 31, along with several other domestic routes, has left tour operators across Odisha in a state of deep uncertainty. Many are reporting a sharp decline in bookings and revenue, as these cancellations disrupt both leisure and business travel plans.

Critical Link Severed: Impact on Travel and Business

The 4-hour direct flight from Bhubaneswar to Singapore was a crucial connection for travelers, offering convenience and efficiency. In addition to this international route, services to domestic destinations such as Indore, Dehradun, Pune, Goa, and Kochi have also been discontinued. The direct flight to Dubai was cancelled earlier on March 1, compounding the challenges for the tourism sector.

Travel agencies and tour planners express that the sudden halt has severely disrupted their business models. Singapore was among the most popular international destinations for Odia travelers, and the route had been operating with government viability-gap funding support to maintain its operations.

Financial Strain and Operational Challenges

Chinmaya Panda, a Bhubaneswar-based travel agent, highlighted the financial impact: "The Singapore and Dubai routes were among the most profitable sectors for us. With both gone and several domestic routes also cancelled, our monthly revenue has dropped drastically."

Another operator, Anurag Sahoo, explained the operational difficulties: "Customers are now forced to travel via Kolkata or Visakhapatnam, which has led to cost escalation and increased journey time. Earlier, passengers preferred Bhubaneswar because of direct connectivity. Now many are choosing to start their journey from other cities, and we are losing clients."

Sahoo added, "We have urged both the state government and airlines to prioritize restoration of key routes to maintain Bhubaneswar's status as an emerging aviation hub."

Public and Industry Concerns Over Aviation Hub Development

Soumya Ranjan Patra, a frequent flyer and IT professional, voiced frustration: "The government keeps talking about developing Bhubaneswar as an aviation hub, but in reality, we are losing flights one after another. We are now forced to travel to Kolkata or Visakhapatnam just to catch international flights. This shows a complete lack of planning and support from the authorities."

Biyot Prajna Tripathy, a member of FICCI, warned of broader implications: "If this trend continues, Odisha will lose out on tourism, business travel, and international exposure. Immediate steps are needed to revive these routes and stabilize the sector."

Government Response and Future Prospects

In response to the concerns, Tourism Minister Pravati Parida stated that some routes were discontinued due to operational and commercial reasons by the airlines. She assured, "We are in constant coordination with carriers to reintroduce flights at the earliest."

This situation underscores the urgent need for strategic interventions to support Odisha's tourism and aviation sectors, ensuring that Bhubaneswar can reclaim its position as a key travel hub in the region.
