Panaji: Five individuals were rescued from drowning by Drishti Marine lifesavers off the beaches of Goa during the extended holiday weekend, officials confirmed on Monday. Among those saved, three were from Pune, including a 44-year-old woman and a teenage girl, who were swimming in the Baga creek when a large wave struck, making it difficult for them to return to the shore. Lifesavers Siddesh Bhosle and Achchini Pamegam successfully brought them to safety.
Rescues at Sinquerim and Agonda Beaches
Along the coast at Sinquerim beach, lifeguards rescued a 30-year-old man who had been pulled into deep water by a rip current. In a separate incident at Agonda beach, a 25-year-old man from Karnataka, who was swimming with a group of 20-25 tourists, was swept out to sea. Unable to stay afloat, he signaled for assistance. Lifesaver Kapil Velip spotted him, rushed into the water using a rescue tube, and brought him safely back to shore, officials added.
Safety Reminders for Beachgoers
Authorities urge visitors to heed warning flags and swim only in designated areas. Rip currents and sudden large waves pose significant risks, even for experienced swimmers. Drishti Marine advises staying calm if caught in a rip current and signaling for help rather than fighting the current.
