Goa's Tourism Minister, Rohan Khaunte, has delivered a candid assessment of the state's crucial December tourist season, describing it as a period of "ups and downs." While acknowledging an increase in visitor numbers, the minister stressed an urgent need to reconsider the very model of tourism and the type of tourists Goa aims to attract.
A Call for a New Tourism Model
Minister Khaunte pointed out that the sheer number of vehicles entering Goa in December had risen. However, he argued that the focus must shift from quantity to quality. "We have to start looking at the type of tourists that are coming in. We have to relook at the model," Khaunte stated. He expressed concern that the actions of a few irresponsible visitors damage the state's global reputation. "It is unfortunate that unruly and irresponsible tourists come to Goa. We need to be alert to stop such things," he added.
Collective Action Needed on Persistent Issues
In a significant admission, the minister outlined a host of problems plaguing the tourist experience, which fall under various government departments but collectively hurt tourism. He called for a united effort from all stakeholders to address these persistent challenges.
The key issues highlighted include:
- Unregulated taxi services
- Rubbish and waste management
- Stray cattle and dogs on roads
- Potholes and poor road conditions
- Harassment by touts
"Although it comes under various departments, it comes under the collective responsibility of the tourism department because tourists experience this," Khaunte explained. He emphasized that Goa's economy survives on tourism, making it imperative to resolve these matters conclusively.
December Performance and External Setbacks
Providing a regional breakdown, the minister noted that South Goa performed "quite good," while the North experienced more fluctuations. He attributed some of the season's challenges to external events, specifically a nightclub fire and significant flight disruptions. These flight issues led to about 30% of cancellations, directly impacting tourist arrivals.
Khaunte revealed that a meeting with all stakeholders is planned, where detailed data from the season will be reviewed to chart the way forward.
Update on GTDC's Unity Mall and Government Projects
Shifting focus to a major infrastructure project, the minister assured that the Goa Tourism Development Corporation's (GTDC) Unity Mall project has secured all necessary permissions. He affirmed the government's respect for the wetland ecosystem surrounding the project site near a lake. Khaunte said he would provide a detailed statement only after a scheduled court order on January 8.
In a concluding remark, the minister pointed to a perceived bias, claiming that while private projects often face little opposition, government-led initiatives tend to be heavily scrutinized and opposed.
