Goa Government to Develop Comprehensive Eco-Tourism Policy
Tourism Minister Rohan Khaunte announced on Tuesday that the Goa government is actively working on formulating a dedicated eco-tourism policy. The initiative involves studying internationally recognized ecotourism models and global best practices to adapt them specifically to Goa's unique ecological and socio-cultural context.
Positioning Goa as India's Premier Eco-Tourism Destination
The primary objective of this policy is to strategically position Goa as one of India's leading eco-tourism destinations. Khaunte emphasized that all 40 MLAs and various stakeholders will be invited to contribute their insights and suggestions during the policy formulation process. "When the eco-tourism policy is ready, we will invite MLAs to share their views," the minister stated during the assembly session.
To create awareness among both tourists and local residents, the tourism department is circulating advisories through multiple social media and marketing platforms. These communications outline the essential do's and don'ts in eco-sensitive areas and highlight the critical need for environmental protection.
Legislative Concerns and Environmental Safeguards
Curtorim MLA Aleixo Reginaldo Lourenco raised important questions about which specific areas have been identified for eco-tourism development and whether comprehensive studies have been conducted. He expressed concern that eco-tourism projects could potentially damage natural habitats if new structures are constructed indiscriminately.
"In the name of eco-tourism, we should not damage the environment," Lourenco cautioned, seeking firm assurance from the government that fragile ecological areas will receive adequate protection during development.
Leader of Opposition Yuri Alemao inquired about the timeline for policy release and whether the government plans to establish limits on tourist numbers, vehicles, and commercial activities in eco-sensitive zones. He strongly urged the administration to conduct thorough environmental audits and implement legal safeguards to prevent overcrowding and ecological degradation.
Minister's Response and Economic Objectives
In response to opposition queries, Minister Khaunte noted that whenever the government introduces new policies, opposition parties frequently protest against them. He highlighted that Goa currently boasts over 200 homestays, many operated by women entrepreneurs who have become "the best tourist ambassadors" for the state.
The minister clarified that eco-tourism promotion serves multiple purposes: generating sustainable local employment opportunities, encouraging rural tourism development, and preventing overtourism in popular areas. Benaulim MLA Venzy Viegas reinforced the need for scientific mapping of tourism sites to ensure responsible development.
This comprehensive approach aims to balance tourism growth with environmental conservation, creating a model that benefits both local communities and Goa's precious natural heritage.
