Karnataka Tourism Department Launches Soft Skills Training for Auto and Taxi Drivers

In a significant move to enhance the visitor experience, the Karnataka tourism department has announced a comprehensive soft skills training program for auto rickshaw and taxi drivers, who are often the first point of contact for inbound tourists. The initiative, which aims to address long-standing complaints about overcharging and harassment, was revealed during Chief Minister Siddaramaiah's recent budget speech, though planning has been underway for several months.

Addressing Tourist Complaints with a Strategic Approach

The decision stems from repeated grievances, particularly from foreign tourists, regarding unfair practices by drivers in Bengaluru and other parts of the state. Thrilok Chandra KV, Secretary of the tourism department, emphasized that the program's core objective is to improve the initial impression tourists form about Karnataka. "We want to enhance the visitor experience by ensuring positive interactions from the very beginning," he stated, highlighting the importance of first impressions in shaping perceptions of a destination.

Comprehensive Training Program with Tailored Modules

The training will extend beyond drivers to include tourist guides, porters, and even police personnel, focusing on basic soft skills such as polite greetings, effective communication, and courteous interaction. The government has allocated Rs 1 crore for this initiative, with plans to implement it district-wise in phases. Each module will be customized to meet the specific needs of different destinations, while maintaining a consistent core curriculum.

"We will collaborate with local associations to design training for drivers and porters," Chandra explained. "Although the fundamental skills will be uniform across districts, we will adjust the training based on tourist expectations for each location." Additionally, the tourism department intends to partner with the police department to identify and address challenges faced by officers when dealing with tourists, developing targeted solutions accordingly.

Industry Stakeholders Welcome Long-Overdue Initiative

Tourism industry experts have welcomed the program, noting its timeliness. Patrick George, President of the Karnataka Tourism Forum, pointed out persistent issues, such as auto drivers charging Rs 200–300 for rides that should cost only Rs 60–70 from Majestic in Bengaluru. He believes that soft skills can dramatically improve a visitor's experience, with simple gestures like a well-groomed driver at the airport or a professional guide making a substantial difference.

However, George stressed that the program's success hinges on consistent implementation. "If the government treats this as a mere formality, it will not yield meaningful results," he cautioned. "Regular updates to the training modules and repeated sessions for drivers, porters, and guides are essential for sustained impact."
