Helicopter Bookings for Kedarnath Pilgrimage Commence with Focus on Safety
In a significant development for pilgrims, the booking of helicopter tickets for the revered Kedarnath yatra officially opened on Saturday. This service provides a crucial aerial link for devotees traveling to the sacred shrine in Uttarakhand.
Booking Details and Schedule
Tickets are currently available for travel between April 22 and May 11, with bookings accessible through the official IRCTC website. According to officials, ticket issuance will continue until June 15, after which operations are anticipated to be impacted by the onset of the monsoon season, which typically disrupts aerial and ground transportation in the region.
Rahul Chaubey, the nodal officer for helicopter operations at Kedarnath, confirmed that "bookings for subsequent dates will be announced shortly." He noted that the booking process, originally scheduled to begin at 12 noon, experienced a delay due to technical reasons and eventually commenced at 6 PM.
Fare Structure and Accessibility
The fare structure for the helicopter service has been set as follows:
- The return fare from Guptkashi is Rs 12,762 per passenger.
- From Phata, the fare is Rs 10,164 per passenger.
- From Sirsi, passengers will pay Rs 6,390 per passenger.
These rates are designed to cater to pilgrims from various starting points, enhancing accessibility to the remote temple site.
Enhanced Safety Protocols Implemented
In response to helicopter crashes reported last year, authorities have rolled out comprehensive safety measures to ensure pilgrim security. A total of 18 pan-tilt-zoom cameras have been installed across eight helipads to monitor operations continuously. Additionally, all helicopters involved in the yatra will be equipped with live tracking devices, allowing real-time oversight of flights.
State Tourism Minister Satpal Maharaj emphasized the government's commitment to safety and transparency. He stated that strict action would be taken against illegal ticket sales and directed officials and police to vigilantly prevent pilgrims from being duped through fake bookings. This move aims to curb black-marketing and ensure a fair and secure booking process for all devotees.
Broader Implications for Pilgrimage Tourism
The opening of helicopter bookings marks a pivotal moment for the Kedarnath yatra, which attracts thousands of pilgrims annually. The integration of advanced safety technologies and strict regulatory measures reflects a proactive approach by Uttarakhand's tourism department to bolster confidence among travelers. As the yatra season progresses, these initiatives are expected to streamline logistics and enhance the overall pilgrimage experience, supporting the state's tourism economy while prioritizing visitor well-being.
