Tragic Selfie Incident Claims Life at Kerala's Azhimala Coast
A 45-year-old man from Pathanamthitta lost his life in a heartbreaking accident while attempting to take a selfie at the scenic Azhimala coast in Thiruvananthapuram on Sunday evening. The victim, identified as Aneesh from Edayaranmula Panchavadi, was part of a 17-member family group on a pilgrimage trip when the tragedy unfolded.
Details of the Fatal Fall
According to police reports, the incident occurred around 5:30 PM. Aneesh had climbed onto a rock along the coastline to capture a selfie when he suddenly lost his balance and plunged into the sea. Despite immediate efforts, he could not be saved, and his body was later recovered from the waters.
Family Pilgrimage Turns Sorrowful
The group, consisting of relatives from Pathanamthitta and Mannar, had embarked on their journey from Edayaranmula on April 10. They traveled via Kanyakumari and reached Thiruvananthapuram on Sunday morning. After offering prayers at the revered Sree Padmanabhaswamy Temple, they arrived at Azhimala around 2:30 PM for a leisurely visit.
Relatives recounted that Aneesh was standing on the beach before deciding to climb the rock for a photograph. The sudden fall into the rough sea left the family in shock and grief, turning what was meant to be a spiritual outing into a devastating event.
Post-Incident Procedures
Following the recovery, Aneesh's body was shifted to the mortuary at Thiruvananthapuram Medical College Hospital. Authorities have stated that a postmortem examination will be conducted, after which the remains will be handed over to his family for last rites. The police are investigating the incident further to ascertain any additional details or safety lapses.
This tragic event underscores the dangers associated with taking selfies in precarious locations, especially near coastal areas with unpredictable conditions. It serves as a somber reminder for tourists and pilgrims to prioritize safety over capturing moments in risky settings.
