Mysterious Khait Parvat: Uttarakhand's Legendary Land of Fairies at 10,500 Feet
Khait Parvat: Uttarakhand's Fairy Mountain at 10,500 Feet

There is a remote mountain in Tehri Garhwal, Uttarakhand, standing at an elevation of about 10,500 feet, where fairy stories and strange happenings have been told by people for decades. The Khait Parvat has always been called "Pariyon Ka Desh" (Land of Fairies). Why does everyone believe that fairies reside here? This is because of the age-old Garhwali myth about the existence of supernatural entities called Aacharis (or Aancharis). It is claimed in local beliefs that celestial female spirits live on this mountain and watch over the nearby villages. One of the most widely recounted legends traces the belief back to a royal family.

The Story of the Nine Sisters

As per local folklore, King Asha Rawat ruled over this region where his queen had borne him nine very beautiful daughters. Once, the girls observed something strange because despite all the darkness prevailing in the area, the peak of Khait Parvat remained illuminated by sunlight. Being intrigued by this, the sisters went up the mountain in order to find out the reason for this miracle. As per local mythology, the sisters never came back but instead became fairies and made Khait Parvat their residence for eternity.

What Happened to Strengthen This Belief?

The folklore was reinforced over generations by accounts of unusual experiences reported by locals and visitors. These include:

  • People claiming to hear laughter echoing through the forests at night.
  • Stories of lights appearing unexpectedly on the slopes.
  • Alleged sightings of women dancing in moonlit clearings.
  • Reports of individuals becoming disoriented or "possessed" before later returning with little memory of the experience.
  • Beliefs that anyone showing disrespect to the mountain could invite misfortune.

Another local myth is that the flowers and fruits picked from Khait Parvat begin wilting or rotting as soon as they are taken off the mountain, which has led many to believe that it shows the fairies inhabiting the place and also their anger.

The Connection Between Khait Parvat and Jeetu Bagdwal

One of the most famous stories associated with the Garhwalis involves Khait Parvat and Jeetu Bagdwal. Jeetu Bagdwal was known for his ability to play the flute. According to the tale, his music enchanted the fairies of Khait Parvat, who eventually lured him into their realm. He was never seen again, becoming one of Uttarakhand's most enduring folk heroes.

Faith, Folklore, and Reality

To date, there is no scientific basis indicating the existence of fairies on Khait Parvat. Anthropologists and cultural scholars see them as a manifestation of the oral traditions among the Himalayan tribesmen who have an intrinsic connection with their surroundings. However, for people living in Garhwal, these are more than just tales. Even today, such legends have an impact on the conduct of people. Some climbers do not use loud music while trekking on the mountain, while some other people do not wear bright colours because they believe that fairies exist somewhere around them. Regardless of whether you believe in the legends surrounding Khait Parvat or not, there is no denying that this mountain offers one of the most enigmatic places to visit in Uttarakhand.
