Bengaluru Airport Defends New Pickup Policy, Says 95% Passengers Comfortable
KIA's New Pickup Policy: 95% Passengers Comfortable, Says BIAL

In a firm defence of its recently implemented pickup and parking regulations, Bangalore International Airport Ltd (BIAL) has stated that the move is essential to control unauthorised touts and ensure commuter safety. The operator of Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) revealed that nearly 95% of passengers are currently "comfortable" with the new system and expects operations to stabilise fully within the next 30 days.

Addressing Chaos and Safety Concerns

A BIAL spokesperson explained that the policy mirrors practices at leading global airports and is a necessary step away from past indiscipline. The spokesperson argued that rolling back the changes would mean returning to the "earlier indiscipline and chaos," calling such a step retrograde. While acknowledging initial resistance during the transition, the official emphasised that continuous improvements are planned over the next one to two months.

The airport operator conceded that some genuine issues have been identified since the rollout. It assured that passenger feedback is being addressed systematically, with the passenger experience at the core of all refinements.

The Catalyst: Protecting Passengers from Exploitation

Detailing the reasons behind the policy shift, the spokesperson highlighted years of passenger complaints. A significant concern involved unauthorised taxi operators coercing passengers, including solo women travellers, during journeys. These operators allegedly demanded fares far above regulated rates and, in some cases, left passengers stranded if their demands were not met.

"This poses a far greater safety risk than a walk of 300–500 metres," the spokesperson stated, justifying the new system which requires pickups from designated zones. The primary goal is to strengthen the authorised and regulated transport ecosystem at the airport.

Special Assistance for Those in Need

Addressing concerns about accessibility, BIAL clarified that passengers with specific needs will not be inconvenienced. The airport has committed to supporting those with mobility challenges, infants, senior citizens, or wheelchair users through buggies and shuttle services. The spokesperson pledged that no effort or expense would be spared to enhance the experience for all passengers.

BIAL remains confident that its decision is correct for the long-term safety and order at Bengaluru's international gateway. The operator is banking on the system maturing and public acceptance growing as the new procedures become routine over the coming month.
