Kochi's Summer Travel Plans Derailed by Middle East Conflict and Soaring Costs

For thousands of residents in Kochi, what was envisioned as a perfect family holiday has transformed into a frantic scramble for refunds and alternative bookings. Advanced travel plans have been upended by escalating geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, compelling many to cancel their long-awaited vacations.

International Bookings Hit Hard with 20% Cancellation Rate

Travel agencies across Kochi are reporting a significant 20% cancellation rate for international bookings in recent weeks. The uncertainty stemming from the Middle East conflict, including developments like drone attacks affecting services and regional military deployments, has created a climate of apprehension among travelers.

"There are several cancellations of international travel bookings, especially by families," stated Anu Sebastian, General Manager of Kochi-based Goout Tour & Travels Pvt Ltd. "A lot of regular summer travellers are now opting for domestic destinations."

Kerala's typical summer outbound tourism preferences include the cooler climates of Europe, the familiar hubs of the Gulf region, or the tropical retreats of Southeast Asia. However, these plans are now in disarray.

Skyrocketing Aviation Costs and Domestic Challenges

Compounding the issue, travelers are finding it difficult to book last-minute trips within India due to a sharp spike in aviation costs. Additionally, an LPG shortage has led to the closure of several eateries, further complicating domestic travel logistics.

"The airfare has become unaffordable for the average middle-class family," Sebastian pointed out, highlighting how the budget-friendly appeal of destinations like Thailand, Vietnam, and Malaysia—popular for their visa-on-arrival perks—has largely evaporated.

Even seasoned international travelers have been forced to reconsider. Muralidhara Pai, son-in-law of the late K R Vijayan, known for his world tours, shared, "We were planning to visit the UK this time. However, there is an element of uncertainty due to the Middle East conflict, which forced us to drop the plan."

Shift Towards Domestic and Local Tourism

With international travel facing headwinds, Kerala's domestic tourism industry is anticipating a significant boost. Deprived of their European tours, holidaymakers are increasingly turning their attention to cooler destinations within the state and across India.

"We're getting more enquiries for domestic hill destinations like Manali," noted a senior official from Somans Leisure Tours India Pvt Ltd. Domestically, Malayalis traditionally prefer Rajasthan, hill stations in North India, or temple visits in neighbouring Tamil Nadu.

Within Kerala, high-altitude destinations such as Munnar, Wayanad, and Vagamon are experiencing a surge in enquiries. Lesser-known spots are also gaining popularity among domestic travelers.

Lijo Joseph, Secretary of the Ernakulam District Tourism Promotion Council, explained, "For instance, the forest department manages Abhayaranyam, a popular wildlife rescue and rehabilitation centre in Kodanad, and Paniyeli Poru ecotourism centre. We've made all arrangements to provide a comfortable experience to the visitors in all the destinations under us."

Industry Braces for Busy Quarter Amid Uncertainty

Travel agencies have admitted that if the geopolitical situation does not improve, more cancellations are expected during the busiest quarter for outbound tourism. The combination of Middle East tensions and prohibitive travel costs has created a perfect storm, disrupting summer plans for countless families in Kochi.

As the travel landscape shifts, the focus is now on adapting to these challenges, with both travelers and industry players navigating towards safer, more affordable alternatives in the domestic sphere.
