Tourists planning a visit to Topslip in Tamil Nadu will soon have the opportunity to experience the wilderness in unparalleled style with the introduction of a premium tented camp at Sethumadai, nestled in the foothills of the Anamalai Tiger Reserve. This innovative project, developed by Trek Tamil Nadu under the Tamil Nadu Wilderness Experience Corporation, aims to seamlessly blend luxury, sustainability, and active community participation within one of the most biodiverse regions of the Western Ghats.
Luxury Meets Sustainability in Forest Setting
Camp Sethumadai features five premium tented units meticulously designed to offer modern comforts while maintaining harmony with the surrounding forest ecosystem. Each unit is powered by solar energy, ensuring uninterrupted electricity throughout the day, which underscores the camp's commitment to environmental stewardship.
Beyond the accommodations, the camp boasts a range of facilities to enhance the guest experience. These include a spacious welcome lounge, a full-service restaurant with a dining hall capable of seating up to 40 guests, a dedicated yoga and meditation centre, and a specialized star-gazing facility, all contributing to an immersive and rejuvenating stay.
Community-Led Management and Economic Empowerment
State Forest Secretary Supriya Sahu highlighted the camp's community-led management model as a cornerstone of its operations. "Sixteen tribal women from nearby villages have undergone comprehensive training in front office management, housekeeping, culinary services, and guest relations, empowering them to manage camp operations professionally," Sahu explained. This initiative is expected to generate sustainable livelihoods for local communities while fostering stronger stewardship of the forest resources.
Educational and Adventure Activities
In addition to leisure, Camp Sethumadai is positioned as a hub for environmental education. Visitors can explore the 'Anamalaiyagam Conservation Centre' to gain insights into the unique biodiversity of the Western Ghats and the rich cultural heritage of indigenous communities.
Vismiju Viswanathan, Chief of Trek Tamil Nadu and Conservator of Forests, detailed the curated activities available. "Guided trekking expeditions, wildlife safaris to Topslip and the adjoining Parambikulam Tiger Reserve, and birdwatching sessions are among the key offerings designed to connect guests with nature," Viswanathan stated.
For adventure enthusiasts, the camp offers a challenging trek to Pandavarai peak in Topslip, a demanding 10-hour round trip that requires prior hill-walking experience. The route is categorized into moderate and tough segments, featuring an 8km gradual climb for beginners and a 10km trail with a steep ascent for seasoned trekkers.

Bookings for Camp Sethumadai will open on March 15 through the official website, www.trektamilnadu.com. The launch coincides with the rollout of the 'Tamil Nadu Trek Atlas', a comprehensive digital and physical repository mapping over 40 curated trails across 14 districts. This atlas provides detailed route maps, biodiversity highlights, and difficulty ratings, catering to explorers eager to discover the state's lesser-known natural treasures.
