Chennai's Madhavaram Lake to Offer Jet Ski Rides from Pongal After Rs 11.56 Crore Restoration
Madhavaram Lake: Chennai's first restored lake with jet skis

In a significant boost to recreational infrastructure in North Chennai, the restored Madhavaram Lake is poised to make a splash by becoming the city's first renovated waterbody to offer thrilling jet ski rides. The facilities, managed by the Tamil Nadu Tourism Development Corporation (TTDC), are expected to be unveiled for the public during the upcoming Pongal holidays, providing a novel leisure option for residents and tourists alike.

A First for Chennai's Urban Lakes

Madhavaram Lake will etch its name in the city's history as the first restored urban lake in Chennai to provide jet ski facilities. While boating has been introduced in a couple of other waterbodies earlier, the addition of high-speed jet skis marks a pioneering step in transforming the lake into a modern adventure spot. With this development, the lake also becomes the second in Chennai to offer boating activities, a move officials believe will dramatically increase visitor footfall, especially among families and weekend tourists.

Phased Restoration and Development Costs

The transformation of Madhavaram Lake into a leisure hub has been undertaken by the Greater Chennai Corporation through a meticulous, phased restoration plan. The first phase of work, completed at a cost of Rs 4.56 crore, focused on a 750-metre stretch. This initial stage involved critical improvements such as desilting the lake, forming new bunds, constructing a toe wall and footpath, and laying essential pipelines for sewer management.

Currently, the more extensive second phase is underway, covering a longer stretch of 1,600 metres with an estimated investment of Rs 7 crore. This phase includes comprehensive dewatering and further desilting, installation of safety handrails, electrical works for lighting and facilities, and extensive tree plantation to enhance the lake's ecology and aesthetics.

Operational Details and Visitor Experience

The Tamil Nadu Tourism Development Corporation will be directly responsible for arranging, operating, and managing the jet ski and boating services. A formal ticketing system will be put in place to ensure smooth operations. Out of the lake's total expanse of 66 acres, approximately 30 acres have been specially restored and earmarked for water-based activities. This dedicated zone ensures ample space for safe boating and jet skiing, addressing key safety concerns while providing an enjoyable experience.

The Greater Chennai Corporation's vision behind this Rs 11.56 crore rejuvenation project is to create a much-needed recreational space for the residents of North Chennai, an area that has traditionally seen limited investment in leisure infrastructure. The revival of Madhavaram Lake is set to offer a refreshing escape and a new landmark for community engagement and tourism in the region.
