Middle East Tensions Hit Rajasthan Tourism: Palace on Wheels Sees 10 Trips Cancelled
Middle East Tensions Hit Rajasthan Tourism, Palace on Wheels Cancels Trips

Middle East Tensions Cast Shadow on Rajasthan's Tourism Sector

The ongoing geopolitical turmoil in the Middle East, involving conflicts between Iran, the United States, and Israel, is now reverberating through Rajasthan's tourism industry. One of the world's most opulent trains, the Palace on Wheels, has experienced a dismal tourist season, with plummeting passenger numbers directly linked to global instability.

Season Ends with Disappointing Occupancy Rates

On Sunday, during its final journey of the season, the Palace on Wheels arrived in Jaisalmer with a mere 30 passengers on board. This marked a stark contrast to its usual capacity of 84 passengers. Two additional scheduled trips had already been axed due to insufficient bookings, highlighting the severity of the downturn.

From September to April this season, out of 32 planned trips, a staggering 10 had to be cancelled. This cancellation rate represents approximately 31% of the total schedule, a figure that has only been matched once before in the train's 43-year history. Tourism stakeholders are expressing deep concern over the substantial financial losses incurred as a result.

Global Conflicts Disrupt Operations for Second Consecutive Year

This marks the second year in a row that international conflicts have disrupted the operations of this iconic train. Last season, prolonged tensions between Israel and Hamas, coupled with the Russia-Ukraine war, similarly led to the cancellation of 10 trips. The cumulative effect of these global crises has created a climate of uncertainty, deterring foreign tourists from traveling abroad.

Tour operator I.V. Singh noted that earlier global issues had already reduced international tourist arrivals, and the recent Iran-Israel tensions have further exacerbated the situation. Previously, the train operated at a healthy 70–80% occupancy, but the final trip this season saw occupancy plummet to around 26%.

Historical Significance and Post-Pandemic Struggles

Since 1982, when foreign tourist inflow began in Jaisalmer, the Palace on Wheels has been a cornerstone of the region's tourism, symbolizing Rajasthan's royal heritage. However, its popularity has been on a steady decline since the COVID-19 pandemic. After operations resumed in December 2022 post-COVID, the train was privatized in 2023 and underwent a complete interior revamp, adding facilities that exceed five-star standards.

Despite these significant upgrades, the train has failed to attract sufficient foreign tourists. High ticket prices, ranging from Rs 12 lakh to Rs 21 lakh, have also contributed to the waning demand. According to operational norms, a trip proceeds only if at least 14 cabins are booked. This season, bookings in several instances did not even reach 10 cabins, forcing cancellations.

Industry Voices Concerns Over Broader Impact

Jaisalmer Railway Station Superintendent Pankaj Jha confirmed that eight trips were cancelled earlier in the season, with two more recently added to the list, bringing the total to 10 cancellations. Tourism entrepreneur Mayank Kumar emphasized that the industry has been severely impacted since the COVID period, with the recent tensions further reducing foreign tourist arrivals. So far, only about 10 trips have been successfully operated this season.

The decline in passenger numbers on this luxury train has dealt a major blow to Rajasthan's tourism economy. The ripple effects extend beyond the train itself, affecting local folk artists who rely on tourist visits for performance opportunities. With fewer tourists, their livelihoods have been significantly impacted, adding to the economic strain on the region.

As global uncertainties persist, the future of luxury tourism in Rajasthan remains uncertain, with industry experts calling for strategic interventions to revive interest and stabilize operations in the coming seasons.
