Nilgiri Mountain Railway Announces Summer Special Train Service
In a move to accommodate the anticipated surge in tourist traffic, the Nilgiri Mountain Railway (NMR) has unveiled plans for a special summer train service. This service will connect Mettupalayam and Udhagamandalam, popularly known as Ooty, and is scheduled to run from March 27 to July 5. The initiative aims to provide enhanced travel options during the peak tourist season, leveraging the scenic beauty of the Nilgiri hills.
Detailed Schedule and Operational Days
The special train service will operate on a fixed weekly schedule to ensure convenience for travelers. From Mettupalayam to Udhagamandalam, the train will run every Friday and Sunday. It is set to depart from Mettupalayam at 9.10 AM and is expected to arrive at Udhagamandalam by 2.25 PM. This timing allows passengers to enjoy a comfortable journey through the picturesque landscapes during daylight hours.
Conversely, from Udhagamandalam to Mettupalayam, the service will be available every Saturday and Monday. The train will leave Udhagamandalam at 4.20 PM and reach Mettupalayam by 11.25 PM. This evening departure offers travelers flexibility, enabling them to explore Ooty throughout the day before commencing their return trip.
Reservation Requirements and Passenger Advisory
To manage the expected high demand and ensure a smooth travel experience, the NMR has designated this summer special train as a reservation-only service. Passengers are strongly advised to book their tickets well in advance to secure seats. This measure helps in avoiding last-minute inconveniences and guarantees a planned itinerary for tourists visiting the region.
The introduction of this special train underscores the railway's commitment to boosting tourism in the Nilgiri district. By providing additional connectivity during the summer months, it aims to attract more visitors and support local economies. Travelers can look forward to a memorable journey aboard this historic mountain railway, renowned for its UNESCO World Heritage status and breathtaking views.
