Palace on Wheels Cancels 10 Trips Amid Middle East Conflict and Low Bookings
In a significant disruption to its operations, the Palace on Wheels, Rajasthan's flagship luxury train, has cancelled 10 out of its 32 scheduled trips this season. The cancellations are directly linked to the US-Israel attacks on Iran and the ensuing Middle East war, which triggered a sharp decline in bookings and numerous last-minute cancellations from travelers.
Impact on Passenger Numbers and Season Operations
The train concluded its season by arriving in Jaisalmer on Sunday with only 30 passengers on board for its final trip. Two additional trips that were scheduled after this journey were also cancelled due to a complete lack of bookings, exacerbating the operational challenges faced this year.
This marks the second time in the train's 43-year history that approximately 31% of its trips have been cancelled. Notably, it is also the second consecutive year that global conflicts have disrupted its schedule. Last season, 10 trips were cancelled amid the Israel-Hamas war and the ongoing Russia-Ukraine crisis, highlighting a pattern of vulnerability to international tensions.
Operational Rules and Booking Shortfalls
The Palace on Wheels has a maximum capacity of 84 passengers per trip. According to its operating rules, a trip does not proceed unless at least 14 cabins are booked. This season, bookings on several occasions failed to reach even 10 cabins, forcing the management to cancel those trips to avoid financial losses.
Pankaj Jha, the Jaisalmer Railway Station Superintendent, confirmed the extent of the cancellations, stating, "Eight trips were already cancelled and the two scheduled after that were also cancelled," bringing the total to 10 cancellations for this season. This situation underscores the severe impact of geopolitical events on luxury tourism in India.
Historical Context and Recent Developments
The Palace on Wheels resumed operations in December 2022 after a hiatus due to the Covid-19 pandemic. In 2023, the train was privatised, a move aimed at enhancing its management and marketing. However, the ongoing global conflicts have posed significant challenges to its recovery and operational stability.
The cancellations reflect broader trends in the tourism industry, where luxury travel is often sensitive to international security concerns. As conflicts in the Middle East and other regions persist, operators like the Palace on Wheels must navigate uncertain booking patterns and adapt their strategies to maintain viability.
