The Tamil Nadu Tourism Department is set to offer an immersive cultural experience by organising a special Pongal Tourism Festival in the historic district of Madurai. This unique initiative aims to showcase the vibrant rural traditions of Tamil Nadu to both domestic and international visitors during the harvest festival period.
Two-Day Festival Across Iconic Villages
The festival will unfold across two significant days at two distinct locations. On January 14, the celebrations will commence at Chatrapatti village. To facilitate easy access, special government buses will ferry tourists from the district tourism office in Madurai city to the village in the morning.
Upon arrival, visitors will be greeted with a traditional welcome by the local villagers. The authentic experience will include a bullock cart ride, allowing tourists to step back in time. They will get a firsthand look at the preparations for the traditional Pongal festival and will also have the opportunity to taste the freshly prepared sweet Pongal, the festival's signature dish.

The day at Chatrapatti will be packed with cultural displays designed to highlight Tamil heritage. Tourists will be treated to performances of classical Bharatanatyam and energetic folk arts. The second leg of the festival is scheduled for January 17 at the world-renowned Alanganallur village. This day is primarily curated for international tourists, who will be taken to witness the thrilling and ancient sport of Jallikattu. For their safety and convenience, a dedicated viewing gallery has been arranged to offer an unobstructed view of the bull-taming event.
Interested foreign nationals must register for this event by submitting a copy of their passport at the District Tourism Office in Madurai. This registration process ensures streamlined arrangements for the visitors.
