Prayagraj's Yamuna Riverfront to Offer Unique Blend of Spirituality and Leisure
The Yamuna riverfront in Prayagraj is poised to become a vibrant hub where spirituality meets modern leisure, as the Prayagraj Municipal Corporation unveils plans for curated experiences that seamlessly integrate cultural traditions with contemporary recreation. This innovative initiative aims to transform the sacred riverbanks into a destination for both religious devotion and family entertainment.
Curated Experiences on Floating Platforms
Residents and visitors will soon have the opportunity to celebrate special occasions such as birthdays, anniversaries, and family gatherings on floating jetties and Shikara-style boats. Additionally, religious events like Sunder Kand recitations will be hosted on these water-based facilities, creating a unique spiritual ambiance. Officials have emphasized that the concept is inspired by successful waterfront tourism models in cities like Mumbai and Goa, but has been carefully adapted to maintain the religious sanctity of Prayagraj, known as the Sangam city.
Strict Norms to Preserve Cultural Integrity
To uphold the sacred nature of the riverfront, strict regulations have been implemented, prohibiting non-vegetarian food, alcohol, and tobacco on all river-based facilities. This ensures that the experiences remain respectful of local cultural and religious sentiments while offering a festive atmosphere.
Smart City Partnership and Development
Under the Smart City project, the Prayagraj Municipal Corporation has collaborated with Entartica Sea World to develop a new jetty at Kali Ghat, with construction set to commence in the coming months. Additional Municipal Commissioner Deependra Yadav highlighted that this initiative is designed to provide a culturally respectful yet enjoyable experience along the Yamuna riverfront, enhancing the city's appeal to both locals and tourists.
Floating Restaurant and Revenue Generation
A recently launched floating restaurant has already garnered significant attention, with a capacity for 40 guests and an exclusively vegetarian menu. Operated by a private company that also runs similar services in Goa and Mumbai, this restaurant contributes an annual revenue of Rs 32 lakh to the civic body, demonstrating the economic potential of such ventures.
Water Sports and Themed Packages
To further enrich the visitor experience, a variety of water sports activities have been introduced, including speedboats, banana rides, catamaran cruises, and pontoon rides. All activities are conducted by trained professionals certified by the National Institute of Watersports, ensuring safety and quality. Officials are also planning additional themed packages, such as meditation sessions and spiritual discourses held on water, to cater to diverse interests.
Customized Amenities and Booking Options
Boats will be equipped with music systems and customizable decorations to suit different occasions, from private celebrations to religious ceremonies. Pricing is structured to be accessible, ranging from Rs 500 per person to Rs 5,000 for a full boat rental. Bookings can be made conveniently both offline at Kali Ghat and online through platforms like BookMyShow, offering flexibility for visitors.
Safety Measures and Tourism Boost
Comprehensive safety protocols are in place, including dedicated rescue boats that patrol the area to ensure a secure environment for all activities. Authorities believe this initiative will significantly boost tourism and generate additional revenue, particularly in anticipation of the upcoming Kumbh Mela in 2031, positioning Prayagraj as a premier destination for spiritual and recreational tourism.
