SpiceJet Flight from Pune to Dubai Faces Major Delay, Stranding Passengers
In a distressing incident, nearly 50 passengers bound for Dubai from Pune were left in a bind on Wednesday after their SpiceJet flight was delayed for more than seven hours, allegedly without adequate information. The flight, which was scheduled to depart at 8:50 PM on Wednesday, only took off around 4:40 AM on Thursday, landing in Dubai at 7 AM instead of the planned 11 PM the previous night.
Passenger Accounts Highlight Communication Failures
Shravan Surase, a Hadapsar resident traveling to rejoin work in Dubai, shared his ordeal with TOI. He stated that ground staff claimed information about the delay was sent to flyers three hours prior, but most passengers, including himself, did not receive any notification. "I reached the airport around 6 PM. After check-in and security, I found out about the delay. No proper information was given, and some were told to wait or cancel for a refund," Surase explained. He added that airline officials refused to assist or take responsibility, leaving passengers frustrated.
Misinformation and Lack of Amenities
Surase alleged that some ground staff incorrectly blamed the delay on the West Asia conflict, but passengers later discovered it was due to the incoming flight from Delhi running late. "For the whole night, we sat in the airport without information or refreshments, except for one bottle of water," he said. He emphasized that the airline should compensate all flyers for the loss of time and poor communication.
Airport Officials Note Cargo Increase Amid Reduced Flights
Meanwhile, Pune airport officials provided context, noting that with only one regular flight to Dubai operational currently and fewer passengers due to the conflict, cargo movements have significantly increased. A senior official mentioned, "Earlier, this flight carried about 500-600kg of cargo. Now, we are sending around 5-6 metric tonnes. Other regular flights to the UAE are yet to resume." This shift highlights broader logistical challenges in the region.
Awaiting Official Response
At the time of reporting, a SpiceJet spokesperson was contacted, but an official response was still awaited. The incident underscores ongoing issues with airline communication and passenger rights, particularly in times of operational disruptions.
