Rajkot's New Lion Safari Park to Welcome Visitors by Summer 2024
The city of Rajkot is poised to unveil its own dedicated lion safari park as early as May 2024, pending final approvals and completion of remaining work. This ambitious project, spearheaded by the Rajkot Municipal Corporation (RMC), has reached approximately 90% completion and is strategically timed to debut during the peak summer tourist season, providing a significant boost to regional wildlife tourism.
Strategic Location and Development Timeline
Strategically situated adjacent to the existing Pradhyuman Park Zoo, also known as Rajkot Zoological Park, the new safari park spans an impressive 30 hectares. The zoo currently operates successful conservation and breeding programs for Asiatic lions, housing 14 lions, and attracts approximately 7.5 lakh visitors annually. The safari project received formal approval from the Central Zoo Authority in December 2023, following its initial proposal in the RMC's 2023-24 budget.
According to Rajkot Municipal Commissioner Tushar Sumera, the construction is in its final stages with a targeted opening window of May or June 2024. City Engineer Manoj Srivastava confirmed that critical infrastructure elements including the compound wall, chain-link fencing, night shelters for animals, inspection roads, watchtowers, and water points have already been fully completed.
Enhancing Gujarat's Lion Tourism Circuit
Currently, the Sasan Gir Lion Safari remains the most popular destination for lion viewing in Gujarat, drawing over seven lakh visitors each year. Rajkot serves as the primary gateway city for tourists traveling to Gir due to its excellent air and rail connectivity. The new Rajkot safari park is specifically designed to alleviate pressure on Sasan Gir by providing an alternative viewing option, particularly during high-demand periods such as summer holidays, Diwali, and Christmas vacations when permits for Gir are difficult to obtain.
Tourists are expected to potentially visit the Rajkot safari first before continuing their journey to Junagadh and Gir Somnath, creating a more diversified and accessible Gir tourism circuit. This development will expand Gujarat's existing lion safari offerings, which currently include experiences at Sasan, Devaliya, and Barda.
Visitor Facilities and Natural Habitat Design
While core animal infrastructure is complete, work continues on several visitor-oriented facilities. According to Engineer Srivastava, remaining construction focuses on the entrance plaza, parking area, ticket counters, interpretation center, waiting lounge, food court, and various recreational amenities. These facilities are crucial for ensuring a comfortable and educational experience for the anticipated large number of visitors.
The safari has been meticulously designed to simulate the natural habitat of the Gir forest, with RMC developing a dense urban forest landscape to provide visitors with an authentic experience reminiscent of the actual Gir ecosystem. Officials project that the new safari park will attract a visitor volume comparable to the existing zoo, potentially bringing an additional 7.5 lakh tourists annually while distributing tourist pressure more evenly across the region's lion conservation facilities.
This development represents a significant advancement in wildlife tourism infrastructure in Gujarat, offering enhanced opportunities for lion viewing while supporting conservation efforts through controlled, educational tourism experiences.
