Rs 2 Crore for Yahiyaganj Gurdwara Heritage Development in Lucknow

The Uttar Pradesh government has launched a significant project to conserve and promote one of Lucknow's most revered Sikh shrines. The state's tourism department will develop the historic Yahiyaganj Gurdwara into a prominent heritage and tourism destination, backed by an allocation of Rs 2 crore.

Preserving Sacred History with Modern Amenities

This initiative is designed to protect the gurdwara's profound historical legacy while significantly upgrading the experience for the thousands of devotees and history enthusiasts who visit annually. State Tourism and Culture Minister Jaiveer Singh emphasized that the development work will be carried out with utmost respect for the site's historical character and sanctity.

The approved funds will be strategically utilized for comprehensive beautification, adding modern amenities, enhancing visitor facilities, and improving overall accessibility. "Yahiyaganj Gurdwara carries the footprints of two great Sikh Gurus. The Yogi government's effort is to preserve its identity while giving devotees clean, safe, and well-planned facilities," Minister Singh stated.

A Bridge Between Faith, Culture, and Tourism

Principal Secretary for Tourism, Culture, and Religious Affairs, Amrit Abhijat, highlighted the project's alignment with the state's broader tourism policy, which centers on modernizing heritage sites. He pointed out that the gurdwara is not merely a place of worship but a vital symbol of cultural inheritance and social harmony.

"With better connectivity, upgraded visitor facilities, and planned infrastructure, we are committed to giving it a prominent place on the tourism map," Abhijat explained. The vision is for the site to emerge as a stronger symbol of Sikh heritage in the heart of Awadh, enabling future generations to connect deeply with the teachings and journeys of the Sikh Gurus.

The Deep-Rooted Historical Significance of Yahiyaganj Gurdwara

The gurdwara's immense importance stems from its direct association with two central figures in Sikhism. According to tourism department officials, it is remembered as the site where Guru Tegh Bahadur, the ninth Sikh Guru, stayed for three days in 1670 while traveling from Patna to Anandpur Sahib.

In a subsequent visit, Guru Gobind Singh Ji Maharaj, the tenth Sikh Guru, spent over two months at the location in 1672. These sacred visits anchor the gurdwara's deep emotional and historical significance for the Sikh community in the Awadh region and beyond.

Beyond its architectural and spiritual value, the gurdwara houses an exceptional collection of historical artifacts. This includes a rare art gallery depicting pivotal episodes from Sikh history. Its most treasured possessions are of immense archival value:

  • Two original ‘hukamnamas’ (edicts) issued by Guru Tegh Bahadur and Guru Gobind Singh Ji.
  • A handwritten manuscript of the Sri Guru Granth Sahib, whose opening page features the ‘Mool Mantar’ inscribed by Guru Tegh Bahadur Sahib himself.

Officials note that this unique collection draws scholars, devotees, and tourists keen on exploring the rich tapestry of Sikh heritage. The state's development project aims to create a fitting environment for these priceless artifacts while ensuring a respectful and enlightening visit for all.
