The Uttar Pradesh tourism department has given the green light to a Rs 3.72 crore project aimed at restoring a historic dharamshala in Naimisharanya and transforming it into a modern pilgrim interpretation centre. This initiative is part of broader efforts to develop the ancient spiritual town into a major tourism hub.
Project Details and Funding
Officials have confirmed that Rs 2.98 crore has already been released as the first instalment, with construction work expected to commence shortly. The project will focus on reviving the old structure while integrating modern visitor-friendly facilities.
Restoration Plans
The restoration plan includes structural repairs, conservation of frescoes, facade cleaning, and preservation of original architectural elements such as arches. Traditional materials like lime plaster and lakhori bricks will be utilised to maintain the building's heritage character.
Pilgrim Interpretation Centre
The redeveloped space will house theme-based galleries exploring concepts such as cosmic order, evolution, epics, and sacred landscapes. These galleries aim to offer an immersive cultural experience to pilgrims, deepening their engagement with the spiritual heritage of the site.
Additional Amenities
An amphitheatre, sculpture trail, cafeteria, and other amenities are also planned to improve visitor convenience and encourage longer stays. The project is designed to enhance the overall visitor experience while preserving the authenticity of the historic structure.
Government Vision
Tourism and culture minister Jaiveer Singh stated that the focus is on transforming heritage spaces into experiential centres that deepen visitors' engagement while preserving authenticity. He emphasised that the initiative is part of a broader effort to expand the state's spiritual tourism circuit, alongside developments in Ayodhya, Kashi, and Prayagraj.
Officials added that this project aligns with the state's vision to promote spiritual tourism and boost local economic development. The restoration of the dharamshala is expected to attract more pilgrims and tourists to Naimisharanya, contributing to the region's growth as a prominent spiritual destination.
