The Odisha government has greenlit an ambitious Rs 71.19 crore project to transform Debrigarh Wildlife Sanctuary into a world-class eco-tourism destination, marking a significant step toward promoting sustainable tourism in western Odisha.
Major Investment for Wildlife and Tourism
The forest, environment and climate change department has approved a detailed project report worth Rs 71.19 crore that aims to position Debrigarh as an international attraction while strengthening wildlife conservation efforts. Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan announced this development through social media, acknowledging the support of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, and Forest and Environment Minister Ganesh Ram Singh Khuntia.
Pradhan emphasized that this initiative would showcase Debrigarh's pristine natural beauty to global visitors while generating substantial employment opportunities for local communities. "This decision will not only introduce Debrigarh's natural charm to an international audience but also create significant employment opportunities for local communities," he stated.
Comprehensive Conservation Measures
As part of the comprehensive plan, an additional Rs 14.18 crore has been allocated for constructing a boundary wall around nearly 100 kilometers of the sanctuary perimeter. This crucial infrastructure project aims to minimize human-wildlife conflicts and enhance protection for both animals and nearby communities. The funding for this boundary wall will be sourced from CAMPA (Compensatory Afforestation Fund Management and Planning Authority) or other state funds.
Officials have received directives to implement immediate steps according to the detailed project report, ensuring swift execution of the transformation plan. The sanctuary, renowned for its rich biodiversity and proximity to Hirakud Dam, is poised to become a major attraction for nature enthusiasts and wildlife lovers from across the globe.
Boosting Regional Development
The eco-tourism project represents a strategic investment in western Odisha's tourism infrastructure that promises multiple benefits:
- Enhanced protection of natural resources and wildlife habitats
- Significant livelihood generation for local communities through tourism-related activities
- Increased tourist footfall in the region, boosting local economy
- Global recognition for Odisha's conservation efforts
Officials confirm that Debrigarh's unique positioning near Hirakud Dam and its diverse ecosystem make it an ideal candidate for developing into a model eco-tourism destination that balances conservation with sustainable tourism development.
