A Pink Phenomenon Grips Rajasthan's Sambhar Lake

The vast expanse of Rajasthan's Sambhar Salt Lake has undergone a breathtaking transformation, its shores now painted in vibrant shades of pink. This spectacular natural event is caused by the arrival of thousands of migratory flamingos, creating a visual feast for visitors and a clear sign of a healthy ecosystem.

Why Flamingos are Flocking to Sambhar

This year, the conditions at the lake have been exceptionally favorable, leading to an unprecedented gathering. Increased rainfall has ensured ideal water levels and an abundant supply of food, primarily algae and small crustaceans, which are the primary diet for these elegant birds. Located along the crucial Central Asian Flyway, Sambhar Lake is a key stopover for birds traveling vast distances from Africa, the Middle East, and Central Asia.

Bird expert Gaurav Dadhich, who has been studying the area for over twelve years, provided key insights. He confirmed that the annual migration typically occurs between October and March, with the peak influx happening in October. "In the last 12 years of studying this area, I have recorded over 300 bird species," Dadhich stated. "This year, due to increased rainfall, birds have arrived in particularly large numbers and are expected to stay for an extended period."

A Major Attraction for Tourists and Experts Alike

The scale of this year's gathering is monumental. Dadhich estimates that there are currently approximately 2 to 2.5 lakh (200,000 to 250,000) flamingos inhabiting the lake area. The two most prominent species gracing the lake are the Lesser Flamingo and the Greater Flamingo, often seen alongside various species of ducks and other waterbirds.

This natural spectacle has turned the lake into a major hub for:

  • Birdwatchers and wildlife researchers
  • Tourists and nature enthusiasts
  • Photographers eager to capture the stunning panorama

Dadhich noted that the lake itself provides a stunning backdrop, enhancing the overall experience for all who visit. The shallow, saline waters of Sambhar Salt Lake, which is India's largest inland salt lake, provide the perfect environment for the flamingos to breed and feed during their long migratory journey, making this a reliable annual event for those looking to witness one of nature's most beautiful displays.
