Six New Ecotourism Destinations to Open at Satkosia Tiger Reserve in Odisha

In a significant boost to wildlife tourism and conservation efforts, six new ecotourism destinations will soon be developed at the Satkosia Tiger Reserve in Odisha. The project, which spans the reserve's two divisions—Mahanadi and Satkosia—aims to provide an enhanced experience for big cat enthusiasts and nature lovers alike.

Development Under Central Scheme

The integrated ecotourism initiative will be funded under the Centre's Special Assistance to States for Capital Investment, according to forest department officials. The six sites include two in the Mahanadi division—Chhamundia and Kusang—and four in the Satkosia division—Purunakote, Jagannathpur, Baliput, and Tikarpada.

Facilities and Features

Key components of the project include the development of entry points into educative interpretation centers, arrival plazas, rest rooms, and canteens for day tourists. D.F.O. (Mahanadi division) Amaresh Pradhan emphasized that arrival plazas will be strategically placed at sanctuary entry gates to offer visitors a restful overview of the area.

"The plazas will feature interpretive displays with pictures and videos, knowledge centers providing detailed facts about the sanctuary, and cafeterias," Pradhan explained. Separate facilities will also focus on raising awareness among students, alongside the construction of rest, safari, and amenity centers.

Riverside Attractions and Natural Views

Given that the two divisions are separated by the Mahanadi Gorge—a 21-kilometer-long gorge where fishing is banned to protect gharials—the new ecotourism centers will leverage this natural feature. "We have boating facilities in both divisions. The new centers will offer visitors the best views of the river and nature from both sides, including riverside dining for day visitors," Pradhan added.

Tiger Translocation and Conservation Efforts

In parallel, efforts are underway to make Satkosia Reserve a premier destination through the fresh introduction of tigers. An expert committee of the National Tiger Conservation Authority approved the resumption of the tiger translocation project in Satkosia in 2024, following a failed attempt in 2018.

The approval came with 15-point measures to be implemented before tigers are brought in, after the NTCA team visited to study feasibility. Currently, there are no tigers in any division of the Satkosia reserve. Additionally, two villages—Kuturi and Maraguda—will be relocated from the core area of the Mahanadi division once residents give their consent, ensuring the forest remains inviolate.

Broader Impact

This development positions Satkosia Tiger Reserve alongside other notable wildlife sanctuaries like Similipal Tiger Reserve and Debrigarh Wildlife Sanctuary as a sought-after ecotourism hub. The project not only aims to boost tourism but also strengthens conservation initiatives, creating a sustainable model for wildlife protection and public engagement in Odisha's natural heritage.
