The ambitious restoration and upgradation project at Thiruvananthapuram's iconic Shanghumugham Beach is progressing swiftly, with officials expecting all work to be completed by February. The second phase of the crucial coastal protection initiative is currently underway, focusing on fortifying the shoreline and enhancing visitor facilities along the popular beachfront.
Phased Progress and Project Scope
The project, sanctioned by the state government in October 2025, was launched to combat severe sea erosion and revitalize Shanghumugham as a premier public and tourism space. The ongoing second phase is being implemented at an estimated cost of Rs 14.8 crore. It covers the remaining portion of a planned 360-meter stretch, extending northwards from the historic Kalmandapam area.
An official from the Irrigation Department, which oversees the work, confirmed the progress. "The second phase is progressing well and nearing completion," the official stated. This follows the successful completion of the first phase in December 2025, which was executed ahead of the high-profile Navy Day celebrations attended by President Droupadi Murmu and other dignitaries.
From Urgent Protection to Comprehensive Beautification
The initial phase involved urgent coastal protection measures and the construction of key infrastructure to ensure safety for the Navy Day event and large gatherings. Officials confirmed that the initial strengthening measures, including the shoreline layer and a 180-meter seawall, have been completed and handed over.
The current phase builds upon this foundation. In addition to critical shoreline protection, the comprehensive upgrade includes several beautification works designed to improve the visitor experience:
- Landscaping and improved pedestrian access
- Enhanced lighting along the beachfront
- Potential construction of seating or gallery spaces for tourists and locals
A Response to Erosion and a Vision for Revival
The project was born out of necessity. Shanghumugham Beach has witnessed rapid erosion over several years, with rough seas repeatedly washing away large sand portions and threatening nearby structures. Earlier consultations with experts recommended a comprehensive plan combining geotubes, sand nourishment, groynes, and diaphragm walls to arrest the erosion.
The current project is seen as the first major step in implementing that broader protection framework. While earlier beautification attempts faced delays due to issues like vendor relocation, the project gained renewed momentum after the decision to host the Navy Day celebrations at Shanghumugham, which required immediate stabilization of the beach for large-scale events.
Once complete, the restored Shanghumugham Beach is poised to reclaim its status as a stable, safe, and attractive destination for both residents of Thiruvananthapuram and tourists, marking a significant achievement in coastal management and urban recreation.
