Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu officially launched the much-anticipated Shimla Winter Carnival on Wednesday. The grand inauguration took place at the iconic Ridge ground in the state capital, setting the stage for a festive season dedicated to the theme of a 'Drug-Free Himachal'. Organized by the Shimla Municipal Corporation, the carnival is scheduled to continue its celebrations until January 1, 2026.
A Colourful Cultural Inauguration
The event commenced with a vibrant and colourful cultural parade, which was personally flagged off by Chief Minister Sukhu. This parade served as a magnificent showcase of Himachal's diverse heritage, as it featured enthusiastic folk dance troupes representing every district of the mountainous state. The Chief Minister immersed himself in the festivities, visiting a painting exhibition at the historic Gaiety Theatre. He also enjoyed the energetic Maha Nati performance and witnessed the competitive spirit at the Home Guards inter-battalion band competition near Town Hall.
Boosting Tourism with Infrastructure and Culture
In his address, CM Sukhu extended a warm welcome to all tourists, highlighting the state's serene and pollution-free environment as a source of peace, recreation, and good health. While assuring visitors of a hassle-free stay, he also made a sincere appeal against hooliganism. Sukhu emphasized that Himachal Pradesh, blessed with exceptional natural beauty, attracts crores of tourists annually.
The government is actively working on a dual strategy to enhance the tourism experience. Basic infrastructure is being strengthened, and concerted efforts are being made to promote the state's rich cultural heritage. The Winter Carnival in Shimla is a prime example, offering a range of attractions in the 'Queen of Hills'. A similar carnival was also launched in Dharamshala on the same day, reflecting the state-wide push.
Strategic Initiatives for Sustainable Growth
The Chief Minister pointed out that such events are vital for strengthening the local economy, noting a steady increase in tourist arrivals. To ensure sustainable growth, the state has taken several concrete steps:
- A revised Eco-Tourism Policy has been notified. Under this policy, the forest department has already allotted 11 eco-tourism sites, with the process for 27 more sites in its final stage.
- These initiatives have proven fruitful, generating nearly Rs 6 crore from various eco-tourism activities between 2023 and November 2025.
- To promote homestays, the government has launched an interest subsidy scheme and introduced a streamlined online portal for registration.
- Furthermore, a Tourism Investment Promotion Council has been established to attract more investment into the sector.
The inauguration of the Shimla Winter Carnival marks the beginning of a prolonged festive season aimed at celebrating culture, promoting well-being, and driving sustainable economic development through tourism.
