Dubai's flagship airline, Emirates, has issued a crucial advisory for residents of the United Arab Emirates planning journeys to the United Kingdom. The warning highlights a significant overhaul of the UK's immigration framework, shifting entirely to a digital system. Missing new mandatory requirements could lead to passengers being refused boarding on their flights.
UK's Digital Border: ETA Becomes Mandatory for Visa-Free Travel
The core of the change is the introduction of the Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA). This is a digital permission to travel that will soon be compulsory for visitors who do not currently need a visa for short stays of up to six months. Emirates has directed passengers to verify their need for an ETA and apply through the official UK government portal: www.gov.uk/electronic-travel-authorisation.
The airline has pinpointed a critical enforcement date for this rule. From February 25, 2026, any eligible traveller without a valid ETA will not be permitted to board their flight or any other transport to the UK. Emirates strongly recommends applying well ahead of the travel date to prevent last-minute disruptions and potential denial of travel.
Existing Visa Holders Must Switch to Digital Status
The advisory also specifically addresses individuals who already possess UK visas but rely on physical documents. This includes travellers using paper immigration documents or those with expired Biometric Residence Permits (BRP) or Biometric Residence Cards (BRC).
Such passengers are urged to take immediate action to access their immigration status digitally. They must create an account with UK Visas and Immigration to convert their status to an e-visa via www.gov.uk/eVisa. Relying on outdated paper documents is likely to cause significant issues during travel as UK authorities phase out physical verification methods entirely.
Updating Digital Records for ILR Holders and E-Visa Users
For travellers with Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) in the UK, currently proven by a passport stamp or vignette, the process involves applying for a free No Time Limit application to obtain an e-visa.
Furthermore, the airline emphasised a vital step for those who already have an e-visa. They must ensure the passport details linked to their UK Visas and Immigration account are current. If the passport intended for travel is not the one registered, travellers must update their details at www.gov.uk/update-uk-visas-immigration-account-details. Failure to do this could result in delays or complications at boarding and UK immigration.
This move by the UK authorities marks a definitive step towards a fully digital border, aiming to streamline entry processes. For UAE residents, a major travel demographic, understanding and complying with these new digital requirements well before the 2026 deadline is essential for a smooth journey.
