UP Leads India Tourism, 137 Crore Domestic Visits in 2025

Uttar Pradesh has decisively ended the year 2025 as India's premier tourist destination, achieving an extraordinary milestone in visitor numbers. The state's unique blend of grand religious spectacles, rejuvenated historical sites, and strategic infrastructure development has propelled it to the top of the national tourism charts.

Record-Breaking Numbers Cement Leadership

Official data from the Union Ministry of Tourism reveals the scale of Uttar Pradesh's achievement. The state welcomed a staggering more than 137 crore domestic tourist visits over the year, securing the number one rank across all Indian states. In terms of international appeal, it attracted 3.66 lakh foreign tourists, earning it the fourth position nationally for foreign arrivals.

The undisputed highlight of the year was the Maha Kumbh 2025 in Prayagraj. This monumental spiritual gathering saw a historic participation of over 66 crore devotees, cementing its place as one of the largest religious congregations in history. Beyond the Kumbh, the state's perennial spiritual circuit—encompassing Ayodhya, Varanasi, Mathura-Vrindavan, and Shravasti—continued to experience consistently high footfall throughout all seasons.

Year-Round Events and Infrastructure Push

Tourism authorities credit the sustained interest to a meticulously planned calendar of cultural and religious festivals. Flagship events like Ayodhya's Deepotsav, Varanasi's Dev Deepawali, Braj's Rangotsav, and Prayagraj's Magh Mela drew crowds from every corner of India and abroad. Notably, Ayodhya's Deepotsav set a new Guinness World Record for lighting earthen lamps, while Varanasi entered the record books for displaying the world's largest Ram Takht during Ramleela celebrations.

This tourist influx was supported by a massive infrastructural overhaul. The year saw the initiation of projects worth Rs 1,283.33 crore. Key developments included:

  • Beautification of ghats in Varanasi.
  • Development of the Kalinjar tourism circuit in Chitrakoot.
  • Creation of tourist facilities along the Ram Van Gaman Marg.
  • Restoration of numerous religious and heritage sites across various districts.

Enhanced air, rail, and road connectivity, coupled with an expansion in hotel and homestay capacity, played a crucial role in accommodating the growing number of visitors.

Policy Framework Driving Future Growth

The success of 2025 is firmly rooted in the forward-looking Uttar Pradesh Tourism Policy 2022. Its impact is evident in the registration of more than 1,750 tourism units in the year 2025 alone. Furthermore, the state successfully attracted investment proposals worth a monumental Rs 37,688 crore, signaling strong confidence from the private sector in UP's tourism potential.

The convergence of faith, heritage, and modern infrastructure has not only given Uttar Pradesh a landmark year but has also laid a robust foundation for its future as a global tourism hub. The state's model demonstrates how cultural capital, when paired with strategic investment and planning, can drive unprecedented economic and social growth.
